They sat in the locker room, the sound of the crowd cheering outside.

'Just because this isn't a final or a semi-final, doesn't mean it's not an important match, every match is important, especially the first match of a season. This match determines our dominance for the rest of the season. We've got two new players and positions have been switched. We want to intimidate them, get in their heads for future games. What are we?'

'Lions!' they yelled.

'What do we play like?' Thomas yelled.

'LIONS!'

They cheered and ran onto the pitch, their brooms held above their heads. As Sirius' shoes hit the dewy grass he felt a sudden wave of anxiety. The last time he'd been on this pitch Y/N had almost died, he'd been helpless watching her die. He shook his head, she was fine, he was fine, they were going to win this match if it was the last thing they did. He looked into the stands and saw his friends; Marlene and Dorcas had a large painted Gryffindor banner hanging over the side of the stands, Mary was attempting to put tiny little ponytails in Remus' hair with crimson and gold ribbons, Peter waved to them as they ran on pitch, cheering. Sirius loved his friends. The Hufflepuff team ran out from the other locker room, swathed in yellow and black, like a swarm of determined little bees. Wood walked up to meet the Captain, Jackson Bright, and shook his hand. Bright smiled, Wood's face remained stony as he nodded. Madam Hooch stood in front of the two.

'Positions! And kick off in 3...'

Sirius mounted his broom.

'2...'

He pulled his Quidditch goggles onto his eyes.

'1...'

He tightened his grip around his broom and looked at Y/N, hair in a messy ponytail, holding the Shooting Star, plagued with burn marks. The images from that night came back to him in a blinding flash. Falling. Crying. Yelling. Burning.

'Go Sirius!' Wood roared.

Sirius realised with a jolt that he had been frozen there for a moment, thinking of the other night. He kicked off the ground and flew up to the goal posts, surveying the match. He didn't want to be cocky, but he was easily the best keeper in the school. In 3rd year he had blocked a goal from Slytherin's star dickhead, Lucius Malfoy, while tying up his hair. His eyes scanned the pitch, the distant sound of commentary and buzz of the crowd in the background. There. His eyes latched onto O'nerly, she made a clean pass to Stewart who started up the pitch. Sirius readied himself for the save when a bludger flew straight towards Stewart. She yelped in pain as her legs were knocked out from beneath her and she dropped the quaffle. Sirius turned, grinning, and watched as Y/N twirled her bat in her hand. Wood caught the quaffle Stewart had dropped and sped up the pitch. He threw the quaffle, carelessly, watching Bright's fingers miss it by a millimeter. The stadium erupted into cheers and cries as the quaffle went through the hoop. 10-nill, Gryffindor. Sirius cheered. Thomas was a bit of a tosser, but even he couldn't deny how talented he was. Sirius couldn't help but think that this might be an easy match.

*

It was not turning out to be an easy match. The Hufflepuff team had improved quite a bit since last year. The players had stayed the same since almost second year, they each knew how the other worked, something that Gryffindor's team struggled with, what with the new players. They were in the lead though. 80 - 40. Sirius lunged forward and saved a goal, throwing the quaffle to Carmon, who raced up the pitch but was confronted with a bludger that Finn only just managed to hit out the way. Carmon scored another successful goal and flew back to the middle of the pitch. Sirius was off his game. Not only were his keeping skills needed less this match, he thought as Y/N stopped yet another chaser from making their way up the pitch, he was off his game. He knew why. He was close enough to Y/N, roughly six metres away, to see the burn marks on her broom. She looked over at him and frowned, mouthing you okay? He nodded and refocused on the game. He wanted answers but they would have to wait. James needed to catch the snitch and soon. If Hufflepuff scored another goal and then caught the snitch it would be a draw. Drawing is losing and Gryffindors didn't like to lose.

'C'mon Jamie.' Sirius muttered.

Then, like he had heard, James dived, his hazel eyes latched on a speeding smudge of gold. The Hufflepuff seeker followed suit, inches behind James. James reached forward, his black curls falling into his eyes. The crowd watched anxiously when-

'JAMES POTTER HAS CAUGHT THE SNITCH!' Jasper, who had been commentating, roared, 'That's another win for the best house.'

Minnie didn't even try to pull the mic away from him.

The stadiums roared with cheers and excitement, as they clapped and hugged each other while yelling and banging the sides of the stands. Sirius cheered and dove to the ground dropping his broom behind him as he ran to James, clapping him on the back. The team whooped, yelled and embraced each other, all applauding James, but James' eyes were trained somewhere else. Sirius shook his head, grinning, as James hollered to Lily.

'Now will you go out with me!'

She rolled her eyes and laughed, 'No!'

James turned back to them grinning, 'Worth a shot.'

The Hufflepuff team shook their hands and Sirius watched the two female chasers go

to meet a girl Y/N waved at from across the pitch, Sam, he thought her name was. The girl waved back and the Hufflepuff team left the pitch to cheers. Sirius found Y/N's messy ponytail in the crowd and made his way towards her. He was pushed back when Thomas' tall frame blocked his way.

'Nice work out there today.' he heard him say.

Sirius rolled his eyes and turned around to see Carmon, who raised an eyebrow.

'Oh come off it, Bellswinder.'

The sixth year grinned and turned away from him, the end of her pink ponytail flicking him in the eyes.

'PARTY IN THE COMMON ROOM!' James yelled.

The Gryffindors around him cheered and they all headed back up to the castle.
