25: Has It Always Been There?

Yamada was a common last name. 

If Nakabayashi had said 'Yamada' it would have been fine. But 'Aizawa' was not a common last name. And together those names held the context of being the names of two teachers that were rumored to be dating. 

What was going on? 

Quickly, Kirishima looked around. This was his debut patrol and that was all that mattered. Just as well as the moment he brought his attention to the street a fight broke out. Before any of his fellow heroes noticed it Red Riot was already on the scene. 

"Hey, break it up!" He called out. One of the villains began to run and Fat Gum jumped in the way. The villain used his quirk to get around and the pro made a comment about Edge. 

Suneater was next into the battle, bashing the villain with a clam shell. What the third year didn't notice was the second villain pulled out a gun. Nao quickly raised a forcefield around them causing the bullet to clatter to the ground. 

The other villain cursed and took off running. Kirishima chased after him while Nao helped Fat Gum subdue the other guy. Something about the situation seemed dangerous to him. Another shot rang out and Fat Gum shouted for everyone to get down. 

Nao covered most of the crowd with a bubble and let it drop when they started getting out of shooting distance. "Please stand back, rest assured I will protect you if anything happens!" Nao called out with a confident smile. He glanced nervously at where the battle was now taking place. Suneater was also standing with them, looking a little stunned. 

"I can't activate my quirk." He said softly. Nao's eyes went wide in shock as he watched Amajiki tense and flex his limbs, obviously trying to make something happen. Nao himself tested his quirk a few times, just to make sure they didn't have an erasure quirk with them. He seemed fine and soon enough the police were on the scene. 

"Thanks so much Suneater! And you, new hero." The friendly police officer said as another officer hauled the villain they had caught away. "It's Kyuen!" Nao said with a smile "And thank you too.". Both were blissfully unaware of what was happening in the alley nearby with their mentor and classmate.

"Wow, Kirishima, Nakabayashi, you're all over the internet!" Uraraka said, holding her phone out to show the class. It was true, photos of the two's debut battle were all over the place with people commenting all sorts of positive things. 

Nao's eyes widened as he read his hero name in several headlines alongside Kirishima. It seemed like the debut was a success and it looked like people were talking about the quirk misunderstanding! Finally! 

"Yours is all over the place too, Uraraka!" Kirishima said with a smile "I'll start bragging that I got to school with Uravity soon!". The girl blushed and stumbled over her words, trying to explain that Tsuyu and Hado were also impressive. They really were thought and it seemed that everyone got the recognition they deserved. 

"I finally used my unbreakable mode during that fight." Kirishima said with a shy smile. Nao's whole face brightened up. "Hell yeah!" Kaminari said, high fiving his friend. "Its not much compared to your ultimate moves though." He added bashfully. 

"No way!" "You're so cool!" "You're so strong Kirishima! And Manly!" The whole class interjected. They were not going to take that negative self talk. 

Nao faked a hurt expression and held the shirt he was wearing out "What happened to team defense?!". Did they make 'Team Defense' tee-shirts? Yes. Were they bright red because that was Kirishima's favorite colour and if Nao was going to make him wear the shirt it could at least be a nice colour? Yes again. Of course there were other offers to join 'Team Defense'. TetsuTetsu was already part of the group and they actively seeking out more hero students with defensive quirks.
