AN ANXIOUS SIGH left your lips as you and Chongyun stepped into the supposedly haunted house located a few meters away from the bulk of Qingce Village. Inhabitants of Qingce warned you two of a spirit that resided in the forest that loomed ominously nearby.
Reluctantly, you agreed to go (not wanting to chicken-out) and reassured Chongyun that it would be fine. You were assigned a commission and called upon the blue haired exorcist to aid you. Upon entry into the woods, you realized that it was just as bad as the villagers had described it. Mist clouded the forest due to the high altitude; leaving the forest damp and wet to traverse. The looming trees canopied above, blocking out any visible sun thus making it permanently dark. Now you knew exactly what mess you've gotten yourself into.
"Don't be frightened, I'll be by your side." Chongyun whispered to you as the two of you entered the supposed 'haunted home'. Your heart rate spiked as you walked into the broken building, clinging to Chongyun's sleeve. "This place looks horrifying. Do you think there's a ghost here?"
"Maybe—" A loud creak cut Chongyun off, his eyes flickering to find the source of the sounds.
A shadowy figure leapt from pile to pile of fallen wood."CHONGYUN— THERE'S A G-GHOST!" You screamed, pointing at the shadows in the decapitated building. His eyes darted to the shadows, gazing into the darkness before a shifting in the dark caused you to scream again.
You clung to him, hiding behind the young exorcist. Your heart thrummed into your chest rhythmically as your eyes darted from side to side, taking in the environment.
"Stay near, I'll exorcise it." Chongyun murmured coolly, slowly stepping close and close to the shifting shadows. A loud crashing from behind caused you to scream. The young exorcist turned around to examine the origins of the sound before everything was still. Dust and debris of the broken home made it difficult to see— not to mention the dimness of the forest.
"'Yun— There's something... AH!"
"(y/n)?" Chongyun spun around to see you quivering in silence, clasping your hands over your ears. He crouched down, gently pulling you close. "What's the matter?"
"S-something touched me..." You stuttered, eyes scanning the room.
"Touched you?" Chongyun repeated, holding you close as his aquamarine eyes squinted to examine the dark. Another shadow danced by the entrance of the house.
"Holy Archons— Why did I agree to this commission!?" You cried, shaking your head.
You never told Chongyun but you were deathly afraid of the occult which was why you enlisted the help of the blue haired exorcist. The two of you grew up together, being the child of a famous adventurer and the child of a famous exorcist family. The two of you followed the paths set out and often requested to help each other.
You had hastily asked him to join you after having ran into him in the streets of Liyue Harbor after receiving your commission details from Katheryne. Chongyun agreed to come, wanting to see a ghost with his own eyes.
Chongyun had never encountered a ghost despite being trained to expel them. Even he had to admit, he was quite afraid himself. The coolness of the forest, the eerie mist, the shadows dancing around the decapitated house; Chongyun was quite unnerved.
"Hold onto me— I'll go check it out..." Chongyun tried to remain calm but the wavering of his voice said otherwise. You nodded, standing behind him. Each step made the wood creak loudly as the two of you approached the shadowy figure that sat perched near the doorway. Chongyun summoned a talisman, blue aura enveloping it before he threw it onto the shadow. You waited in baited breath, watching eagerly to see what would occur next.
The 'ghost' hopped. You stared in absolute bewilderment as the talisman hit it, the light from the aura illuminated the soft brown fur. Your jaw hung unhinged as the realization set in that the 'ghost' you and Chongyun were screaming about was—
"Oh my Archons— it was just a squirrel."
Relief washed over you, your legs collapsing as the furry creature ran out of the house, frightened. Chongyun sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "We were fooled good, huh?" You sighed, nodding quietly. He took a seat beside you, looking out the entrance of the house.
You laid your head against his shoulder, quietly trying to regain your composure but the flashbacks of earlier caused embarrassment to flush your cheeks. "S-sorry about my yelling... I really thought it was a ghost..."
"I-It's fine... I lost my composure as well..." Chongyun sighed, running his fingers through his soft locks of hair. "Although I have to say I'm kinda upset we didn't get to see a real ghost..."
You laughed nervously. "If we did, I probably would've cried."
Chongyun gently brushed your stray hairs aside, whispering. "I wouldn't allow anything bad happen to you."
You blinked, flushing at how words before laughing. Feeling rather shyly, you mumbled a 'thank you' in a hushed manner to which he pressed a kiss against your forehead.
"Let's go back to the Harbor and enjoy some ice cream shall we?" You nodded eagerly, jumping up from your seated position. Chongyun smiled and followed you out of the supposedly 'haunted' house.
