-I hesitated to ask him if this deal was anything, but business. But, knowing Ruben and how he kept all of his company information confidential, I was most likely not going to earn any worthy answers.
"Mr.Efrain, I was wondering if you might have a minute to spare." He glanced up at me before the artificial ringing of his cell phone filled the conference room.
"If it's important you can head to my office, and if it can wait then you may head home for the day Ms.Rossi." As he finished his sentence, he grabbed his phone and walked out of the conference room leaving me in utter silence and the elegant view of Manhattan.
Deciding to head to his office, I gathered all of my belongings and made sure to glance at the view one last time before walking out of the same door he had walked out of not too long ago.
The way to his office and the conference room was short and it didn't take me long to situate myself in one of the corner chairs in his office, not knowing how long his call may take.
The loosened strands of my hair ran down my cheeks while my fingers stayed fumbling in my lap, listening to every tick of the clock planted on the noir black wall.
The call seemed to take longer than expected, as I relaxed my straight posture into a slant in the cushion of the seat. The clock read 6 pm which was a healthy reminder of how Gavrill must be waiting downstairs for me. It wouldn't be long before my father would ring me up in concern, so I made sure to pull my phone out and leave a quick message to him.
The Manhattan sky painted in deep pinks and violets as the sun drowned from view in the Hudson River. It wasn't going to be long before the painted sky would be embraced by the blanket of black at night.
My eyes grew heavy in the silence of the office and my slowed breathing relaxed each hesitant nerve inside of me to a slow rush. Before I knew it, I had closed my eyes completely as I waited for him to come and hear me out.
-
A soft touch grazed my cheek as I remained still heavily oblivion to the world. I slowly opened my eyes to see Ruben standing there. His liquid grey churned like a storm in his eyes as they finally met mine that were in contrast too colorful.
He didn't pull away immediately as his fingers seemed to caress right on my cheek for a little longer before he tucked in the loose strand of my hair behind my ear. I let out a hesitant waft of breath as I waited for him to continue. But, disappointingly he pulled his fingers away from my face and retreated to the corner of the office.
I didn't realize how it had grown dark outside and the intricate colors in the sky had been blanketed in the color black. Only the corner lamp in the office was on, illuminating the office enough to make out each other briefly.
"You should head home, it is quite late." He said as he poured some whisky in a glass cup. The auburn liquid seemed to glow in the dark room as he brought it up to his lips. As he pulled the cup away from his mouth, his lips glistened in the liquor. I don't know what was actually more intoxicating, him or the liquor that he was consuming without restrain.
"What about what I had to tell you?" I added as he looked at the same view I was looking at before I decided to fall asleep waiting for him to finish his call.
"It can wait till tomorrow." He answered shortly before he placed the glass cup that was now empty, back on the marble table.
I didn't want to argue further, if he said it can wait till tomorrow then I'll just have to discuss the matter with him tomorrow. I gathered my belongings all while avoiding looking at him. I could sense his eyes on me, but it was rather intimidating looking right back into them than avoiding them.
When I finally managed to get a hold on all of my belongings, I glanced at him and indeed he had his eyes on me this whole time. A new glass of whisky was in his hand. Maybe he was hoping to escape the reality we call life just as bad as I was. His eyes spoke a thousand words that he could never speak himself.
He was just as oblivion to the spider web he was stuck in as I was. We were both waiting for the darkness to invade us completely.
My eyes widened as he placed the glass of whisky down on the marble counter and he moved towards me. The notebook and file in my hands was snatched and dropped on the floor of the office as his arm wrapped around my waist.
"You want to know something funny Violette?" He whispered into my ear as I stood there frozen, waiting for him to continue.
"You try so hard to keep yourself together when all you want to do is lose your control." I grasped onto his elbow to keep my balance.
Before I could answer or retort his phrase, he pulled away from me and walked back to his drink.
"Good night Ms.Rossi." He said and with those last words I grabbed my dropped notebook and file.
"Good night Mr.Efrain." I said before walking out of the office with a racing heart.
