Steve hears gunshots coming from the building above him, from the streets below. He looks up to the roof where the sound came from and instinctively runs into the building.
At the top of the stairs, he notices a hole through the door knob, he opens the door slowly and sees blood covering the snow. Standing on the snow covered roof are Natasha and Yelena. He glances across the roof and sees the lifeless body of another women, her own blood corrupting the softness of the white below her. Steve helps Nat with Yelena, letting her put some weight onto Steve for support.
"Steve?" Natasha asks breathlessly. The subtle glimmer of tears brim her eye lids.
"I'm here too love birds," Yelena coughs to the two of them.
"What happened?" Steve asks.
"That's the person who killed my parents. I swear Steve I wasn't going to kill her until she shot Yelena," Natasha looks to Steve, her eyes asking for wordless forgiveness. Steve wraps an arm around her shoulders and kisses the top of her hair.
"I know. It's ok," Natasha sighs into his shoulder.
"Let's get out of here. Yelena needs a doctor,"
"I'll be fine sis, it's a through and through, just needs to stitched up,"
Steve helps the two girls to the street, and then into a cab. They drive to the outskirts of the city and Steve checks them into a motel room.
--- --- --- --- ---
Yelena's side mostly stopped bleeding by the time Natasha lays her down on one of the beds in their room. Natasha pulls a suture kit from her bag and starts cleaning the wound. Steve sits down on the other bed and watches Natasha work, her forehead scrunched in concentration.
Soon, Yelena passes out from the meds Natasha gave her. Nat gets up carefully from the bed and walks wordlessly into the bathroom.
Natasha stands facing the mirror above the sink, she watches Steve come in behind her and closes the door. She turns slowly only to end up face to face with his chest. His arms instinctively wrap around her as she crumbles into him.
They sink to the floor together. Tears soaking through Steve's shirt.
"I love you Natasha," Through a sniffle she replies,
"I love you too Steve. Thank you for coming here,"
"Of course. Anywhere in the world for my best girl," He comforts, his hands rub spiral like patterns on her back.
"Why aren't you mad?" She whispers into the nape of his neck.
"Why would I be mad Natasha?"
"I just left. Again. Now you're here and I don't understand why,"
"When you really love someone you'll go to the end of the Earth just to be their for them. I knew you needed me. So I'm here,"
"Thank you Steve," She cries again, another flood of tears gather on his shirt. Steve plants a kiss on her hairline. Then another on her forehead, then a final one on her nose. Natasha laughs hoarsely. She pulls herself up onto his lap and snuggles closer to him. Steve relishes in the weight of her, and smiles into her neck.
Some time passes, and the couple is still cuddled up on the tile of the bathroom floor. When the bathroom door opens, no light shines through, night settling in further.
"What the hell are you two doing?" Yelena laughs. Natasha looks up at her through puffy eyes and laughs.
"Well I gotta piss, but your welcome to stay," This time Steve laughs and helps Natasha stand up. Steve follows Natasha out of the bathroom and closes the door behind them, giving Yelena some privacy. Natasha goes through Steve's bag and pulls out a t-shirt. She strips down to her bra and panties and tugs the shirt over her head; taking note of how her muscles ache.
Steve changes into a pair of sweatpants and draws back the covers on their bed. Steve slides in first and lifts the sheets for Natasha who settles in next to him. Steve's large arms wrap around Natasha waist and he pulls her into him. He sighs greatly into the softness of her red hair.
Natasha pushes back into Steve to be closer to him. He plants a chaste kiss on the back of her neck.
"G'night," He whispers.
"Good night Steve."
--- --- --- --- ---
The next morning, Natasha is the first to wake. She gets up slowly, takes a shower and gets ready for the day. She calls Tony next to tell him to get his jet ready.
The sun has fully risen when Steve joins Natasha on the front deck of their room. His arms wrap securely around her from behind.
"We've come along way haven't we," Natasha says, turning to face him.
"We have. Is Yelena goin' back with us?"
"Yeah. I want her to stay in New York, if I can convince her to stay,"
"I'm sure she will,"
The sun rises low in the sky, slightly blinding the pair. Flurries from the night before continue to trickle down from the few gray clouds above. The cold nips at both of their ears and noses. Steve pulls her closer as the wind continues to blow flurries in both of their faces.
"What's next?" Steve asks.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean where do we go from here. What does the future look like for us,"
"It can be whatever you want it to be Rogers,"
"What do you want it to be?"
"Well, I'd like a place of our own. Maybe Brooklyn if you'd like,"
"Don't know if I can afford a place in Brooklyn,"
"Stark will buy us an entire block if I ask nicely," The pair chuckles.
"It doesn't matter where we end up. I'll go anywhere as long as I'm with you,"
"That's cheesy Nat. Didn't know you where one for clichés," Natasha stands on her toes and kisses him softly on his lips. She melts into his warmth. He pulls her into a hug. After a moment she whispers into his ear,
"Come on Rogers. Let's go home."
