The job

"Bring her in please," an arrogant yet mellow voice says as the two guards dressed in blue from head to toe bring me into a room.

It's a massive room, weird and interesting.

"Welcome to my office, dear," the voice says again.

Office? I would've taken a million guesses before office came to mind.

"I'm Jeanine," she continues speaking. "how are you?"

I can't bring myself to responding. My mother was never fond of the Erudite which made me like them no more.

"Can you hear me, dear?" Jeanine says a little careless.

"No," I say sarcastically. "Why'd you care anyway?" My eyes land on hers.

I glare so sharply that she has to look away.

"Of course I'd care, my dear, you are a part of this society. I care for everyone here," Jeanine responds unconvincingly.

"Fair enough. Then what am I doing here exactly?" I say naive.

"I've got a job for you," she responds and before I can stop her, she continues. "I need you to help me find the Divergent. You're factionless, what better could you possibly do with your time?"

I feel offended. Even though I had never grown up in a faction it didn't mean I was less important. "And what makes you say that?" I say trying to sound as confident as possible, without much success.

"Well, do you have a job?" she begins again, "No, I'm 15-" I start. "Do you eat every day?" "No, but-" she keeps cutting me off. "Well, there you have it. You want the job or not?"

I've got nothing left. "Sure, whatever," I sigh.

She leads me back into the hallway to the guards. "Bring her to the testing lab," she says eagerly.

Testing? "Wait, did you just say testing lab?" I start getting nervous. My mother always told me to never take any kinds of tests because it could reveal my identity. I don't know why I should care but she assured me it was dangerous.

"I'll explain later," she says speed-walking away.

"No! I never agreed to any tests, Jeanine!" I'm shouting.

When the guards start pushing me towards another hallway I start screaming and fighting back. I hit one of the guards right under his chin and he fell to the ground unconscious. Well, that was surprisingly easy I say to myself. When I'm about to hit the other one the same way something stings my arm and all I can feel is pain and more pain and then everything goes black.

When I wake up I'm strapped to a chair, it looks like an old dentist chair or something. As soon as I realized that there are a bunch of machines around me probably waiting to get into my body I start wiggling around trying to break free.

"It's no use," A young male voice begins.

I look around and see as I expected, a young boy in Erudite clothing. He has green eyes and a hooked nose, dark brown hair, and dimpled cheeks.

"She knows how capable you are, so she did some precautions," he finishes.

"What do you mean, capable?" I say more confused than I should be.

"You're tough, wild, and smart, which likely means that you're divergent," he says.

I almost laugh, but the serious look in his eyes stops me.

"Divergent? And what? She's scared of me? What's your name?" I startle.

"We've been taught in childhood to be afraid of divergence, they could take over us," how is he still calm?
