First training lesson

We heard noises above and stopped doing whatever we were doing. Everyone expected Four to come down the stairs and take us to our first training, but that wasn't the case at all. Eric came rushing down the stairs and said.

"Change of plans everyone, we're going straight to dinner," Eric said almost out of breath.

I tried to catch up to him but there was no luck. Everyone knew something was up and couldn't wait to get out of this hell-hole to see what had happened. As we walked through the Pit, it was deadly silent, no one was there except a few guards, everyone else had just simply vanished?

Someone shouted the question everyone had been thinking, "Hey! What happened? Where is everyone?" A tall, skinny boy came running up to Eric. He had dark shiny hair that gleamed in the relative darkness in the Pit. He had a wide white smile, almost as if what had happened was a joke to him, his nose was very long with a narrow bridge and his eyes were wide open and dark green. He seemed older than the rest of us, possibly 17? Four came up running after him, looking like he was searching for a lunatic who had just escaped his mental facility, the other boy being the lunatic. Before Eric could answer the boy, Four jumped in and almost dragged him away.

"Peter, get lost, stop interfering with the initiates," he said. Interfere? I have a bad feeling about this.

I was so focused on their conversation I didn't realize Josh was huddled up behind me, hiding.

"Hey, Josh? What's up?" I say to him sarcastically.

"Sorry, I- uh I was just tying my shoelaces, you know?" he stood back up. He looks around to make sure that the Peter guy and Four were gone. He looked nervous, but that expression was immediately replaced with fear when we all heard a loud bang.

My instincts turned me around right before a blonde-haired girl was about to throw a punch at me. I swung back and kicked her leg, causing her to wince. Everyone is staring at us, fighting. What the hell is going on? Why is nobody doing anything? Isn't Eric's job to protect me? As I and the girl keep fighting, more people are running in and attacking the initiates. Are they crazy? We've had absolutely no training whatsoever and they just throw us into an animal cage expecting us to survive? The blondie hits me right in the nose and I stumble backwards a few steps. I shield my head with my arms, preparing for the next awful hit but nothing happens. When I look back up I see that Josh had lunched forward and jumped on the girl. He's throwing mad punches at her and she seems almost unconscious when I yell.

"Josh!" I pull him off of her. "I think that's enough-" I say.

"Wait a second, is that-" I start but get cut off by Josh. "The Stiff that came last year, yeah, the people attacking us don't seem older than 17, I think they're all old initiates," He looks at me worried. "And my brother is one of them," he stands up and runs away.

His brother? He looked almost afraid. Is he afraid of his brother? Why would he join dauntless if his brother is here? Maybe to get over his fear, could be possible. Wait- I mean I knew the whole time Josh wasn't really tying his shoelaces, but I didn't know what he was doing. Could Peter be his br- my thoughts were cut short after I receive a hit to the head. I turn around quickly and see two boys, like Josh was saying they both couldn't possibly be over 17. One of them is dark-skinned and has a buzz cut, the other one is Peter.

"Two against one?" I shout. "Not fair!" as I kick the dark-skinned boy in the balls, whoopsie-

I jump back to my feet and try as best as I can to dodge Peter's hits. I'd probably be able to beat him easily if I had months of training as he does! This is so unfair. At the corner of my left eye, I see Eric and Four standing and just watching. Watching?! What is wrong with them?! They should be helping us! My focus turns back to Peter, and as he tries to punch my jaw, I swing to the side and grab his hand, giving me a chance to hit him. I hit him and he stumbles to the ground as I kick him in the balls to keep him down. I look around me, some of my fellow initiates are lying on the ground, unconscious, some of them are trying their best to fight back, but with no luck. In about a few minutes I realize I'm the only initiate left standing. Shit. What the hell am I supposed to do now? I was supposed to pretend to be an Erudite, no Erudite knows how to do this on their first day of dauntless training. I look in Eric's direction. He's biting his lip and he sends me a dirty glance, signaling that he has to deal with my irresponsibility now. Lauren isn't paying much attention to me, she's talking to someone, and then she walks away with them. Four, on the other hand, is mesmerized, even stunned. I almost feel proud of myself. I hear groans behind me and I look back at Peter.

"Heard you got second place last year, Peter, that ain't doing you too good now, huh?" I say smirking. He's furious.

"You certainly know what you're doing Jessica," he says. "Truly hard to believe your from Erudite," I frown. He's the one smirking now. "Yeah," he chuckles and stands up, wincing in pain.

"You really take it seriously?" Peter examines questions me. "What?" I say almost immediately.

"Kill or be killed," he quotes, then walks away, still wincing.

(authors note: lmao I know that 'kill or be killed' is from the hunger games, just pretend i didn't steal it from there)

Everyone who attacked us that wasn't lying on the ground, unconscious started walking towards me. Are they all going to attack me at the same time? Anyone with a shred of humanity left would know that it isn't. I looked in Eric and Four's direction but they didn't look one bit concerned. They started walking towards me as well. Then everyone started clapping and cheering. They're clapping for me? I sigh. I'm relieved. I would 100% not be able to take on all of these people by myself. Four pats me on the back and fake smiles at me. I knew he still hated me. I grin, guess he can't really fail me if I just happen to be way better than everyone else. Eric is also smiling, but it's not fake like Four's.

"Congrats! This was your first lesson in training," A dark skinned girl says. She is tall, with long legs and a willowy frame. She also has jaw-length dark hair. She looks pretty.

"What do you mean?" I frown. "My first lesson in training?" my smile and confidence drops.

"Is there something wrong?" Four asks me. Eric gives me a confused and concerned look.

"Is there something wrong?!" I shout and shake his hand off my back. "How could you even ask me that?!" I'm furious. "You send us up here defenseless, making us think something is genuinely wrong and then let your former initiates attack us? You know, the ones that have already had a year of training, while we just arrived her an hour ago," I'm not focusing my words on anyone except Four.

"You know, I've heard about you, Four, I have. You're supposed to be the understanding trainer, while Eric is supposed to be the cruel one," I say. He opens his mouth to say something but I cut him off before anything escapes his mouth. "You wanna tell me that you couldn't do anything to prevent this? Well, let me break it down for you, Four, that's bullshit," I spit the words in his face and then storm off.
