Winter's POV

I woke up in a cave with some bandages wrapped around my waist, with Y/N's cape covering me like a blanket and a cushion of some sort under my head. I slowly sat up and noticed that the cushion was Y/N's shirt and jacket folded up. I saw him then enter the cave completely shirtless, revealing his toned but slightly scarred body. He noticed me sitting up and said, "Oh, good. You're awake." I held my head and said, "What happened?" He placed down some logs, summoned a ball of fire, and lit it. Then he walked over to me and said, "After you passed out, I ended up having to kill the remaining gang members. Once they were dead, I picked you up and carried you here for shelter. Luckily I had grabbed a first-aid kit when we got off the Dropship. I laid you down, took off my jacket, cape, and my shirt, and began to tend to your wounds. I used my semblance and my sword to help cauterize it. I folded up my jacket and shirt and rested your head on them. Then I gave you my cape as a blanket to keep you warm. I've been keeping watch by the cave entrance in case any Grimm or more gang members showed up." I nodded and said, "How long have I been out?" He sighed and said, "Roughly 2 days. But I made myself a promise a couple years ago, that I would never let anyone else die on my watch. Never again."

I went to stand up but he stopped me and said, "Oh no. You're in no shape to go anywhere, Winter. Not yet anyways. I've been changing your bandages every night. I know for a fact that your side wound has not healed enough. At the rate your Aura has been healing it, I'd say that it'll be at least another day before we can go anywhere." I nodded and said, "Why didn't you just call for backup or a medical evac?" He replied, "Because we're too far out of range of any of the CCT Towers." I nodded again and said, "I see." He nodded and said, "Now, if you're alright with it, I'm going to get us something to eat." I nodded and he left the cave. I thought to myself, Maybe he's not as careless as I thought he was. I mean he did save my life and he tended to my injuries. Maybe he's not the kind of person I assumed he was.

Your POV

After I left the cave, I said to myself, "At least I didn't lose her. Not like I lost them." I saw a deer a couple meters away from me. I smiled as I lined up the shot and killed it. I used my sword to cut it open and retrieved some of the more meaty portions. I put the meat in the napsack that I had stolen from one of tbe gang members, and headed back to the cave. When I returned, I placed a couple more logs on the fire and placed the meat on an old piece of a shield that I found near the cave. Then I went over to Winter and said, "I meant to ask, how are you feeling?" She smiled weakly and said, "Alright, I guess." I smiled and said, "Good." She looked at me and said, "Hey, Phoenix." I cut her off and said, "Please, call me Y/N." She nodded and said, "Right. Y/N, I was wondering why you are so caring for me right now. When we first met, you seemed like such a cold and careless guy that just does whatever he wants. But now you're the complete opposite. So if you don't mind me asking, why is that?" I smirked slightly and said, "Because I didn't want to lose anyone else. Not like how I lost my team..." Winter looked at me and said, "If you don't mind me asking, what happened exactly?" I sighed and said, "Well, it was about 3 years ago. My team and I were on a Search and Destroy mission. It was our 2nd day there and we had just managed to kill the last of the Beowolves that were in the area...."

Flashback

I slashed the Beowolf's head clean off and said, "Alright, that's the last of them. Great job, guys." Lance spoke up and said, "You too, Phoenix." I rolled my eyes and said, "How many times do I have to tell you, Lance? Call me Y/N." Tera said, "Too many, that's for sure." Murray walked over to us and said, "But he's right, you did do a great job yourself." I smiled and said, "I know. Let me call in our transportation." I pulled out my Scroll and called for a Bullhead to pick us up. They said it would be a few minutes. I put my Scroll back in my pocket and immediately heard Tera yell, "URSA!" I turned and saw two Ursa Majors come out of the woods. My team and I got into attack formation and began to fight the Grimm. As we were fighting, I got thrown back into a tree. I then watched as my partner, Lance, was fatally bitten in the side by one of the Ursa Majors. I yelled as I ran towards it. As I finally managed to kill it, I heard a piercing scream. I turned and saw as Tera flew into the stone cliff, which snapped her neck. I ran to help Murray with the last Ursa Major. As we fought it, it swiped at me with its claws, cutting me across the chest and breaking my Aura. I laid there defenseless as Murray charged at the Grimm with his sword. But right as he stabbed it in the chest, I watched as a Nevermore feather nailed him in the head, killing him. I laid there covered in my own blood as I heard the sounds of an airship accompanied by gunfire. Then I passed out.

End Of Flashback

I continued, "I woke up in a Vale hospital a few days later. The Bullhead that had arrived had shot and killed the Nevermore and rescued me. But none of my teammates had survived." I took a deep breath and added, "I eventually got over the loss of my team, but it changed me into the person I appeared to be to everyone. And that day, I made myself a promise. A promise that I would never let anyone else die on my watch." Winter nodded and said, "I had no idea. I know it wasn't easy to tell me that." I smiled as I checked on the now fully cooked meat and said, "It's fine. The food's ready." I gave her a piece and we both ate. When we finished eating, Winter said, "Hey, Y/N. Thanks." I looked at her and said, "For what?" She smiled and said, "For saving my life." I smiled slightly and said, "It was nothing. If you don't mind, I'm going to change your bandages." Winter replied, "Go ahead." I nodded and changed her bandages for some new ones. Once I had wrapped the new ones, I said, "Your wound has healed up enough to allow us to head to somewhere with a better CCT connection. So you should get some sleep, we'll leave in the morning." She nodded and said, "What about you? Have you slept even once since we arrived in this cave?" I replied, "Your health and safety is more important than me getting a couple hours of sleep. Besides, I'm used to staying awake for multiple days straight. Now get some sleep, Winter." She nodded reluctantly and laid back down. I laid my cape on top of her before I grabbed Phoenix Fury and headed back to the cave entrance to keep watch.
