My leg shakes, a steady up and down rhythm in harmony with my beating heart. I fiddle with the bottom button on the leather jacket gripped tightly in my fist as I sit in my chair.
"Hey, are you okay?" Mace says, placing a hand on my thigh to soothe the jittering.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just nervous," I look down to the button between my fingers.
"I trust the doctor. He will wake up," she tries to calm me down but it doesn't help too much.
"I know. . . but I can't help thinking, what if?" I remove my hands from the bottom and place them on my lap looking up at her.
"What if?" She raises her eyebrow, "What if he wakes up?" I look to her confused, "stop thinking about all the bad what if's and start thinking about all the good what if's."
"I guess."
"Come on, say it. What if he wakes up?" She nudges her head forward to push me on.
"What if he wakes up?" I say, focusing more on confirming it to myself then listening to Mace.
"What if he comes back better then ever?"
"What if he comes back better then ever?" I mimic her.
"What if he wakes up and proposes?"
"What if he wakes up an-" I realise, "wait!" I furrow my brows at her.
She just laughs and sends me a small smile, "see, I knew that would work," she winks and funnily enough it did, I smiled.
Suddenly the door opens and Val and Ace walk in.
"Hey, where did you guys go?" I ask.
Val points to Ace, "Oh this dipshit wanted a Kit-Kat."
Ace just happily takes a bite out of the chocolate, "Whah I hah ah cravinh," he says muffled while shoving the rest of the bar into his face.
Mace scoffs, "pig."
"Hey! I heard that!" He whines.
"You were supposed to!" Mace calls out as she walks out the door, she notifies me that she's heading to visit Kaitlyn during her lunch break.
"Hey before you go can you ask her how long the doctors gonna be?" I look down at my watch, 6:01pm.
She notices me furrowing my brows as I look at the time and says, "It's okay Onyx, remember what I told you."
Remember what she told me. What if he wakes up?
*****
I practically burst from my seat when I hear the door open. The doctor walks in with another nurse behind him.
It is now 7:00pm and Mace had come back to sit with me 45min after she left, apparently Kaitlyn was called in during her break.
"I'm sorry for my tardiness, a patient had been rushed here with a code blue," he stated as he squints his eyes and adjusts his glasses, pushing them further up his nose.
"What's a code blue?" I ask him, I really wanna know what was so important that it held up Knox's awakening by an hour.
I know that's probably selfish to think, but I can't help it. It's been weeks.
"Code blue is when someone goes into cardiac arrest," he says gesturing to his bed.
"Oh," I feel a little guilty now. Someone else is now in my position.
But now he's waking up, I think to myself.
I will get to see his gorgeous golden eyes and his olive skin return to its normal hue, the life re-entering him for the fist time in weeks.
