Chapter 2: The Calm Before the Storm

You woke up the next morning to Soldier shaking you awake. "Shadow, hey wake up doll," he said hovering over you.

"Five more minutes," you protested turning your back to him and pulling the blanket over your head. Soldier laughed behind you and went to sit at his desk.

"I don't care if you stay here, but I wanted to work on this sketch so just stay over there," he laughed carefully pulling out the supplies he needed. As much as you were curious about what he was working on, you respected his privacy and sat up in bed keeping your distance.

Without looking back Soldier gestured to two mugs on his bedside table, "I grabbed us some coffee, I know you are addicted."

You laughed at him as you grabbed the mug, "thank you, I would probably die without caffeine."

Soldier chuckled before turning his attention back to his desk, you grabbed a book that he kept for you and settled in on the bed reading and sipping your coffee. You had never stayed in Soldier's room overnight before, but you had to admit that it felt like you two had been living like this forever. It was easy with Soldier, a small piece of calm and happiness in an otherwise hectic world.

"Soldier," you called across the room as you closed the book you were reading.

"Hmmm," he responded still focused on his sketch.

You dramatically threw your body down on the bed with a sigh, "I am bored, want to play a game?"

He looked at you with an infectious smile on his face, throwing a pencil at you, "you are incredibly distracting do you know that?" he asked throwing the blanket back over his work and coming over to sit on the bed with you.

You looked up at him innocently, "yes and you love it," you responded with a laugh.

He chuckled before grabbing an old deck of cards from his bedside drawer and opening it up. "you wish."

He dealt out two hands of cards and you spent several hours playing various games to pass the time. After a while you both got bored of the games and decided to put the cards away. "You want to go eat?" soldier asked you as he stood up from the bed.

"Yeah sure," you responded getting up and throwing on one of his sweatshirts and standing at the door.

"Wow that was fast," he said with a laugh pulling on his own sweatshirt and meeting you at the door.

"Well, I am hungry," you laugh opening the door and walking in to the hallway.

As powerful as you are, most of the hydra men scared you. You were the only female in the entire compound and perhaps the only female hydra agent. You were surrounded by men, many of wish would like to have you for themselves. Another good thing about solider was he usually scared these men off. He placed his metal arm protectively around your shoulders as you walked to the kitchens to grab some food. The gesture was small, but it meant a lot to you.

Once you arrived in the kitchens you grabbed a small container with a meal in it. Life wasn't glamourous, but you had gotten used to the food, it was plain but not bad. The food today was chicken and mashed potatoes, one of your favorites. You grabbed an extra helping of potatoes before waiting for soldier to grab his own food. The cooks technically weren't supposed to let you take extra food, but you usually got away with it. There were some perks of being the only girl, most of the staff was nice to you.

Soldier grabbed his food container and you walked out of the kitchen and towards the common area where there were tables for you to eat. "Soldier?" you said looking up at him as you walked, "do you think we can just eat in your room and watch more movies?" you asked him smiling innocently.

He laughed, "you really liked the TV didn't you?" he asked as he made a turn back towards your rooms.

"Maybe a little," you responded with a laugh. You walked back into soldier's room and you both sat on the floor eating and watching more old movies.

You spent the rest of the day watching TV and talking with soldier. You were laying on the bed with your head on his shoulder. Life was perfect, at least this moment was, life was messy, but in this moment, you and soldier were happy.
