You woke up days later in a bed in the medical bay, you tried to sit up but your arms had tubes running in and out of them. You frantically looked around and tried to move, having flashbacks to the conditioning room.
Suddenly Soldier burst through the door followed by medical staff chasing after him, “You cannot be in here, Soldier, she needs to be looked at.”
“You can look at her while I’m here,” he responded over his shoulder as he approached you.
“Hey, shadow, its ok,” he soothed you running a hand through your hair.
“Get these things off of me,” you said still trying to fight them.
Soldier nodded to you, “she is awake, take these monitors off,” he instructed.
All of the doctors looked at one another until and older lady stepped forward, “I am afraid we cannot do that, she still needs to be monitored for any residual illnesses.”
He turned around irritated but still leaving his hand on you, “you told me she had a concussion and a few broken ribs, what residual illness is there?”
“I am afraid she could have severely damaged her head and may require further conditioning,” the lady responded.
At the word conditioning you grew worried and upset, “I won’t go back there,” you said pulling at the wires and tubes in your body.
Soldier turned his attention back to you helping you take the monitors and IVs off so that you could move. “You cannot do that,” the lady protested but Soldier spun on her and picked her up by her throat.
“Try and stop me,” he said defiantly.
“Soldier please just get me out of here, I want to go to our room,” you responded pulled the last monitor wire off of you and sitting up. The pain in your body was more present than it was a few days ago and you winced loudly.
Soldier looked at you softly and dropped the woman. “I got you,” you said walking over to you and gently picking you up. He carried you all the way to his room and kicked the door open before setting you gently on the bed.
He laid next to you after he placed a soft blanket around your exposed shoulders from your hospital gown. “What happened?” you asked him softly laying you head on his shoulder.
He looked at you with sad eyes and brushed his hand against yours grabbing on to your fingers. “He stared right through me, like you were empty, it was scary,” he explained, “I was talking to you and then I was yelling to you and you just kept staring, it was like nothing was in your head. Eventually someone heard me yelling and opened the door, they took you out and to the medical bay but wouldn’t let me near you. For days I sat outside your hospital room and waited for you to wake up. One of the nurses fed me information, that’s how I found out you had a severe concussion and a few broken ribs from you fight,” he finished looking at you.
“I’m sorry,” you responded.
“I’m not mad Shadow, but why didn’t you tell me you were hurt?” he asked more hurt than anything, “I would have helped you.”
“I honestly didn’t feel it, I mean I do now but before that I didn’t I think I was so worried and so stressed that my mind just ignored it until I collapsed,” you explained.
“It’s ok, I’ll take care of you now,” he whispered gently laying his head against yours.
“Thank you,” you responded moving slightly to place a gentle kiss on his cheek. He smiled and you both laid there in silence, Soldier always careful not to disturb you. Eventually you fell asleep, but Soldier never did, he was worried the doctors and officers would come and take you away, and he refused to let you go again.
---
You woke up to Soldier still awake next to you, “Did you sleep?” you asked him.
“No,” he responded looking down at you still resting on his shoulder.
“I can stay awake for a while if you wanted to rest now,” you offered.
“It’s ok doll,” he comforted. He got up slowly so not to disturb you and walked over to the TV and put a movie in before coming and laying next to you again, “thought we could have a movie day.”
You smiled, “I’d like that.” You settled in and resting your head on Soldier’s shoulder and enjoying the peace and quiet. The peace did not last long before agents kicked down the door and walked into the room surrounding you.
Soldier quickly jumped up and put his body protectively in front of yours as more and more agents entered the room followed by a new man you had never seen before and the commander. “Mr. Pierce I do not think this is necessary,” the commander was saying while trailing behind the man.
Pierce held his hand up, “Rumlow gave me a different report and I feel these actions are necessary,” he was talking as if we were not even in the room, “the girl is soft and it stems from the relationship you have let fester, they should be separated and the girl will be reconditioned since her concussion seems to have knocked all sense from her.”
“No!” Soldier shouted still shielding me, “you will not take her.”
Pierce laughed, “you cannot stop everyone boy, be thankful I don’t send you to be wiped as well.”
You gripped tightly to the fabric of Soldier’s shirt trying to steady yourself. “I won’t let them take you,” Soldier whispered to you.
“You see this commander,” Pierce said gesturing to the two of you, “you have allowed them to form a bond that they think is stronger than us.”
“It is,” you pipe up from behind Soldier trying to gather all of your strength. You pushed out from behind him a little and stood tall against him.
Pierce laughed again, “you may have been formidable a few weeks ago little girl, but I assure you that you have nothing on us now,” he explained referring to your not so healed body.
“Grab her, I am done discussing it,” Pierce commanded. The men moved in but Soldier fought against them and so did you, what little you could. The fighting got more and more intense as more agents entered the room. You stopped to take a breath because your broken ribs did not let enough air in your lungs, but you had taken a second too long and you felt a dols knife against your throat.
“Take one more move Soldier and I’ll kill her,” it was Rumlow’s voice behind you.
“Commander wouldn’t let you kill his favorite assassin,” Soldier said back.
“The commander is no longer in charge here,” Pierce chimed in, “kill her if he moves, she has become a liability.”
Rumlow pressed the knife down into your neck a little further and you held in a wince, but you are sure Soldier saw it on your face. You tightened your jaw defiantly, “do it Soldier, I’d rather die that go back there.”
Rumlow gripped you tighter causing the knife to go in deeper, a trickle of blood fell down your neck. Rumlow looked at Soldier expectantly, at first his eyes were filled with anger and hatred, but they turned to sadness when they met yours. He held his arms up in surrender, “I’m sorry Shadow but I can’t watch you die.” Other agents descended upon him and pinned him down.
Rumlow smiled as he dragged you away out the door. Soldier yelled for you and tried to get up and reach you but there was little he could do now. He finally got to his feet but the others kept a hold on him and he watched you get dragged away as you were reaching back for him. You saw a tear fall down his face as he realized there was nothing he could do to save you. You reached for him just so he would know you needed him.
“I have always loved you,” you mouthed to him so know one else could see. Another tear fell from his cheeks as he read your lips. He kicked and reached harder, but he could not reach as you were being dragged down the hallway.
“I love you,” he shouted not caring that everyone could hear him. He needed you to know that he loved you, he was hoping his love would be enough to save you from the place you feared more than anything.
