Flashback to 1940s
You were finishing putting on your makeup and smoothing out your dress when your best friend walked into your room. “Y/N! Come on we're going to be late!” Jamie shouted, grabbing your shoes and helping you strap them on.
“You are just ready to see Bucky again aren't you?” you replied with a laugh grabbing your jacket and walking out the door with her.
“Oh please,” she laughs, “you know he only has eyes for you.”
“That is not true, he’s just my brother’s friend, I’ll always be like a little sister,” you responded as you made your way down the street to where you were meeting them.
“Steve is cute too you know, in his own way,” Jamie explained, looping her arm through yours and falling into step with you.
“I know you’ve always liked my brother, Jamie, he fancies you too,” you teased leaning into her.
You both carried on laughing with one another as you made your way to the bar that you were to meet your brother and Bucky. They were waiting for you both in front of the door.
“Well hello ladies,” Bucky shouted, waving at you before you had quite gotten to the door. Steve hung behind him, but still looked happy to see you.
“Hey boys!” You shouted back pulling Jamie along with you. Bucky immediately embraced you and spun you around causing your dress to flair up. You giggled into his neck as he put you down and you placed a chaste kiss on his cheek before pulling away.
“Oh sorry,” you laughed reaching up to wipe off the red lipstick stain you left. He blushed and let you wipe it off.
You smiled before turning to Steve and pulling him into a tight hug as well. “It’s been so long Steve, I have missed you.”
Steve smiled as you let go of him, “Well I haven’t seen you that much since you went away for school, you look great sis.”
You returned his smile and stepped back so Jamie could join you, “I am sure you remember Jamie, she is really excited to see you both again too.”
Jamie blushed but stayed close to you, “It’s good to see you again Steve,” she smiled then nodded to Bucky, “and you too Sergeant Barnes.”
Bucky laughed, “Bucky, please. No one has to call me Sergeant for a few more days.”
Your smile faded, “they’re taking you that quickly, you only just got back from training.”
He looked down at his feet, not knowing what to say for a few moments before clearing his throat and putting on his usual smile. “Come on girls, we promised you a good night, let’s go inside.”
You smiled again and pulled Jamie inside with you giggling to each other. Steve and Bucky led you to a high top table not far from the dance floor and ordered a round of drinks.
“What’ll you be having?” Bucky asked you with a smile leaning next to you, “something fruity?”
You lean closer to him, “you disappoint me James, you know I’m a whiskey girl.”
“How could I forget,” he laughed, placing the order with the waiter, “and don’t think you can get away with calling me James.”
You laughed at him and turned to see Jamie and Steve wanting to talk but both not knowing where to begin. “Are you a whiskey girl too?” Steve asked tentatively.
Jamie giggled, “no, no. I for one do not shy away from something fruity.”
Steve smiled and ordered them each a fruity drink. Together they could each be who they were, you have always thought they would end up together.
