Flashback to 1940s

Steve had left for basic training weeks ago, he sent you a few letters and seemed genuinely happy.  He had invited you to his ceremony where he was granted the spot in the scientific division, he was going to undergo some kind of procedure and he wanted you to be there.

He had invited Jamie too, but she refused.  So you were alone in a cab headed to downtown Brooklyn to see your brother for the first time in a long time.  You got out of the cab at the location he sent and waited for him outside the antique shop.

“(Y/N)!” Steve called from down the block.  Although he had just complete basic training, he still looked like a twig to you.

“Steve!” you shouted back giving him a big hug as he and another women approached you.

“Oh, (Y/N) this is Agent Carter.  Agent this is my sister,” Steve introduced.

She stuck her hand out for you and you took it confidently, “Peggy please, and I have heard a lot about you,” she said kindly releasing your hand.

“All good I hope,” you laughed.

“All good,” she responded with a smile.  You instantly liked Peggy, she was like another version of yourself.  She led the way into the antique shop and through a pair of hidden doors to a lab.  Steve was immediately led off to the a strange looking device and prepped for procedure while you and Agent Carter were escorted up to a viewing area.

“Steve has told me a lot about you,” she stated making idle conversation while you waited for the procedure to begin, “he said you were going to school in Quantico but did not know what you were studying.”

“Oh that’s because he would never approve,” you stated, “I began studying literature but then I was recruited for a special training program within the FBI,” you explained.  “I am an agent there now, I guess I had desirable skills or something that allowed them to recruit a woman.”

She laughed, “well that is wonderful,” she said clasping you on the shoulder, “we are both women in fields that don’t usually want us.”

You laughed, “I suppose we are.”

“You should come back to the base with me, whatever skills you have I am sure we can put them to use, I am not just a training instructor,” she explained, “I think we would work well together.”

You thought about it for a moment, being on an  army base might mean seeing Bucky again, and you had clearance from the FBI to attend military operations while you were on leave between assignments.  “I’d love to.”

“It’s settled then, you can just come with me after this whole scientific charade and we’ll get you all set up,” Peggy explained a huge smile on her face.  She was just very excited to have another woman around that she could relate to.

Before you could talk anymore, one of the scientists cleared his throat and waited for attention.  He introduced that nature of the procedure and wasted no time in injecting Steve with some liquid.

You were concerned for your brother, but he seemed so excited about finally getting his chance that you had to be happy for him.  As the machine he was in moved upright and began to close, you smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up from the viewing area.  The last thing you see was his smile and wink to you as the doors of the device closed.

Suddenly you heard screaming that sounds like Steve, and it was getting louder and the lights got brighter.  You and Peggy both shifted in your seats, concerned expression on your faces.  Suddenly the screaming stopped and the doors of the device slowly opened revealing Steve.  Only this was not the Steve you so moments ago, this Steve was taller and more muscular than he was.

You and Peggy both ran down to the main floor of the lab pushing past officers, doctors and scientists to get to Steve.  “Hey Steve, how are you feeling?” you ask him once you were close enough.  For the first time you had to look up to meet your brother’s eyes.

“Taller,” he replied breathlessly.  He leaned on you for support as people walked around congratulating the scientists and making plans.

Still holding on to Steve you noticed a man in the back, who was looking around suspiciously.  You leaned over and whispered to Peggy, “who is that man?”

She followed your gaze, “I am not sure.”  She stepped away from you and started walking towards the man, by now a few other men had gotten close to him whispering in his ear.  As Peggy got closer the man drew a gun and pointed it at the scientists firing several shots at the same time an explosion upstairs went off.

Chaos ensued as people scrambled for cover and shots went off.  You pushed Steve to the side and grabbed a gun from the side of one of the military officers who was wounded.  Peggy also drew a gun and was returning fire as the men scrambled to the door.

You quickly took aim and fired off two shots, striking both of the men’s companions.  But it allowed the first man to escape through the door.  You made eye contact with Peggy and she waved at you to follow her out the door.

Steve was by your side in an instant, “where did you learn to shoot like that?” he asked frantically looking around.

You started running towards Peggy to go after the man but you quickly shouted back, “the FBI.”

Steve looked very confused but a smile krept over his lips, “of course she did.”
