Flashback to the 1940’s

After that night with Bucky, you had spent every waking second together before he left for the Army.  The day you had been dreading finally came, you woke up in Bucky’s bed where you had crashed last night after a fun game night with Jamie and Steve.  Bucky had respectfully moved to the couch in his studio apartment where he was still asleep.

You didn’t want to wake him so you crept around to the small kitchen and brewed a pot of coffee.  You poured the coffee into two mugs and walked to the small table and sat them down.  Then you gently sat down by Bucky’s head on the couch.

You lightly stroked his hair, “wake up Buck, I don’t want you to be late.”

He stirred a little at your touch and opened his eyes, “well good morning doll, thanks for the coffee,” he responded sitting up and taking a sip.  Then he leaned over and gave you a gentle kiss on the cheek.

“What time do you have to be at the train station?” you asked checking your watch.

“10 hundred,” he responded taking a few more sips of his coffee.

“It’s already 8,” you pouted, still not ready to let Bucky go.

“I know doll, want to have breakfast on the way?  We could leave early and walk to the station instead of taking a cab,” Bucky suggested with a smile.

You smiled at him, grateful he wanted to spend his last hours at home with you, words could not express how much you were going to miss this man.  “That sounds great, we would have to leave soon though,” you explained already getting up to change into some shorts and shoes.

Bucky smiled and quickly washed your coffee mugs before he changed into his uniform and waited for you.

“Ready doll?” he asked from the other room.

You quickly finished tying up your hair and walked out to the living room.  You looked Bucky up and down in his uniform trying to memorize every inch of him.

Bucky noticed and smiled, “you like it?”

You nodded, “you look so handsome, Sergeant Barnes.”

“Oh stop it,” he laughed putting his arm around you and guiding you out the door.  He turned around to lock it, Steve was going to be checking in on the place from time to time so Bucky did not have to move all his things.

Bucky walked you down the streets, stopping at your favorite restaurant for breakfast before leading you to the train station.

You were waiting in the train station where a ton of other newly conscripted men were boarding the train.  You still had a smile on your face, but you were terrified of letting Bucky go.  You had a tight grip on his arm as he led you through throngs of people saying what could be their final goodbyes.

Bucky pulled you to a halt at a small opening of people next to one of the train doors.  “Doll…”

Tears filled your eyes before he could even continue speaking, “I would ask you not to go but I know what you would say,” you said refusing to let the tears spill over.

Bucky closed the small distance between you and held your face in his hands, “I feel like we could have had so much time together if I had just told you how I felt a long time ago, now I am cutting you short.”

You took a sharp breath in and knew you had to be strong for Bucky, “we will have all the time in the world when you come back,” you said placing your hands over his.

He smiled gratefully at you and kissed your lips with passion and love.  After a few seconds he pulled away and pulled something out of his pocket.  He held open a small box that revealed a necklace inside of the army seal on a golden chain.

Bucky shuffled his feet nervously, “I uh got you something, it’s not much but I thought it could remind you of me.”

You smiled at him and picked up the necklace running the seal engraving through your fingers.  You felt something engraved on the back and flipped it over.  Inscribed on the back of the seal were the words for my best girl.

“Bucky, it’s beautiful,” you said, “can you help me put it on?” you asked handing him the necklace and turning around so he can attach the clasp.  You turned around admiring the necklace.

“Thank you,” you replied still clutching the pendant in your hand.

“I’ll come back for you doll, and I’ll write to you everyday,” Bucky said knowing his time is being cut short and he has so much to say.

“Bucky-” your words were cut off by a loud whistle warning the soldiers it was time to board the train.  You didn’t waste anytime jumping into his arms and holding him as tight as you could.

After a few second Bucky pulled away and gave you a quick but passionate kiss on the lips before slowly backpedalling to the door of the train without taking his eyes off you.

He hopped up on the train still looking at you as it slowly started to move.  You were not ready to say goodbye.  As desperate as you felt you looked, you ran with the train across the platform to keep Bucky in sight as long as possible.  He smiled at you as you ran alongside the train.  You were running out of space and knew you had to slow down but you kept moving.

“I love you doll,” Bucky yelled to you, “I always have.”

You smiled at him and grabbed a hold of the final pole on the platform to stop your momentum.  You held onto the poll and leaned out shouting back to him, “I love you too!”

His smile could not be brighter as he kept watching you, the image of the man you love the last thing you see as the train disappears from sight.
