Cathrine

I was so mad at Lory.

She was supposed to be my best friend, and kind of my only friend here. Everyone else either hates me for being uncool, or for hanging out with Lory. But with Lory, she accepted me and appreciated me when no one else would.

I mean, pretending to be someone like her, someone who cares about clothes and makeup and shoes and boys 24/7 is exhausting. But it's better than being an outcast, a loner, having no friends even among actual family.

I can see how people who don't know her don't really like her, but she's not usually that bad. Lory was one of the Aphrodite kids who like to break hearts, a thing of honor in her cabin before Piper came along. She's had too many boyfriends to count and breaks up with them almost as constantly as she changes clothes. Which is quite a lot...

Anyways when the new kids came to camp, she dumped her most recent boyfriend and turned to them like fruit at a supermarket, choosing only the best one for herself.

We found out that TJ, Connor, and Draco were the only single ones out of all the guys. Lory assured me that the scary daughter of Iris, Luna, was going to get with Draco and getting between them wasn't worth it. I just nodded and pretended to know what she was talking about.

She said that Connor was either socially awkward or gay, and both would make it hard to get to him in only three days. She made it seem like this made him a horrible person but from the few words I'd exchanged with I'm, he seemed really nice, if not a little shy.

So that left TJ, who was pretty, no, really extremely cute. He had smooth dark skin and short black hair, his back sometimes straight like a soldier, and other times relaxed and calm. He made his friends laugh and was kind. He was awesome, and although I usually turned a blind eye, I genuinely didn't want him to get hurt by Lory.

Plus the fact that I liked him... just a bit.

We were walking to the strawberry fields, and I saw TJ standing in the middle of them, looking confused. He was cute when he was confused. I saw him smile as we approached. I noticed Lory give him a dazzling smile using all of her perfectly white teeth, which made her look even more beautiful than usual.

I rolled my eyes slightly as we reached him. I showed him how to properly pick strawberries, but only the ripe ones. Of course, I can grow them to make them bigger and better, but he seemed content with just picking through them, adding the best to his basket.

"Why don't you have a basket Lory?" He asked, looking at the other girl who was wrinkling her nose at a mosquito that was trying to land on her.

"Oh, I um, have back pain. Yeah, it's really bad," she said with a groan to add to the effect. I sighed as quietly as I could, but TJ heard it and turned to me. He saw my expression and his smile turned into a frown. I could tell he didn't believe her.

Later, when we were crouched over to gather strawberries away from Lory he asked, "Why did she lie?"

I grimaced, "The truth? She hates getting dirty but wants you to pity her so you'll date her. Then she can dump you before you leave, and she'll move on," I whispered back, trying to save him from the same old story.

He nodded, frowning again at Lory, "So why are you friends with her?" he asked me, looking into my eyes which distracted me for a second. What did he ask?

"I- well, she's not that bad and no one else wants to be friends with me," I said, realizing it was what I told myself often to explain why I still called her my friend.
