June was right. Eventually someone drove past and jump started us. It was annoying and we didn't get home until the sun had set but I have never been happier in my entire life.
I am so goddy thrilled that my car broke down. I so thrilled that I can't even speak. In fact, the car ride home is mostly silent. June drives the rest of the way because I drove out there and halfway back.
When we pull into the driveway, I jump out of the car faster than I thought possible. I run around to the other side and throw open June's door, pulling her up for a kiss.
She laughs against my mouth. "Day, you know I'm not going anywhere."
"I know. It's just, this is something I can do now and I intend to do it fairly often." She giggles and rests her forehead against mine, wrapping her arms around me.
We rock back and forth together, listening to the sounds of the night then June freezes abruptly. "What are we going to tell our brothers?"
At the mention of brothers, thoughts of Eden fill my head. I realize just how subconsciously worried I am. "I'm not sure yet, we'll think of something but right now, I need to see Eden." I say. The romantic moment is kind of spoiled but June is as understanding as always. She twirls dramatically out of my embrace and pushed me lightly towards the door.
"Go, I'll be right behind you."
"Thanks June." I smile at her and with that I let go of her hand and run inside.
Eden and Metias are seated on the couch, so engrossed in conversation that they don't seem to notice when I open the door. "Eden!" I call, sliding my shoes off. He gasps turning his head in my direction.
"Daniel!" He jumps up from the couch apparently forgetting that he can't see, and tries to run to me. He stubs his toe on the couch and hits his shin on the coffee table, grunting in pain.
"Hold on kid, I'm coming. Just stop for a second, you're going to freaking kill yourself, yeah?" He pauses, reaching down to rub his shin but then tries to start running again.
When I reach him I lean down and pull him as close as I possibly can. "Sorry I took so long kid." I mutter into the top of his head.
"Where the hell were you?" He asks, voice wavering. I would say something about his language but I can tell he is actually really distressed right now.
I glance over at Metias who also has a worried look on his face. June and I probably should have called in the car as soon as we got reception but neither of us thought to do so. "The car broke down and we had a wait for someone to stop and help us. Also Lucy's house is in the freaking mountains."
"Who's Lucy?" he asks and I try to release him from the hug but he continues clinging to me.
"Our caregiver." I ruffle his hair affectionately.
"You should have called."
"I'm sorry." No excuses. Not for him.
"Call next time, Ok?"
"Ok but I don't plan on getting stuck in the mountains again any time soon." He still hasn't let go of me. I smile. "Eden, I'm starving, can I go get some food."
"Sure." he says but doesn't move a muscle. Metias gives me a knowing smile.
Can you get me some food? I mouth to him. He grins and nods at me in response. "Thanks." I whisper, smiling back.
"Come on, let's go sit down kid." I say and he lets me pull him towards the couch. When we get there he snuggles up close to me and closes his eyes. I realize just how late it actually is then. "Wait, why the heck aren't you asleep Eden?" I ask.
