On the drive home, June falls asleep in the passenger car. We stopped to pick up some fast food for dinner, eating it in a parking lot, just talking and enjoying being around each other.
Now it's almost 10 and I'm driving us home in the dark. The lights of the city shine around me as I wind my way through the streets. Suddenly my phone rings and I pull over, answering it quickly as to not wake June. "Hello?" I whisper. I didn't even check to see who was calling me.
"Hello Daniel, it's Lucy."
"Oh, hi Lucy. Is everything ok over there? We're on our way home now."
"Yes, yes everything's fine. Eden just wanted to say goodnight to you before he went to bed but if you'll be home soon then he can just wait."
I nod even though she can't see me. "Ok. Can I talk to him for a second anyways please?"
"Of course!" I hear some rustling and then Eden's voice over the phone.
"Daniel?"
"Hey kid, how are you doing?"
"I'm great! Lucy and I baked cookies and now she's helping me walk around by myself. Today was so much fun! How is your date going? Are you coming home soon? Oh please tell me your coming home soon, I miss you! I know that's stupid because it's only been a few hours but..." he trails off
"It's great that you had fun today Eden but remember what I said about your feelings being valid. It's not stupid, I miss you too!"
"Ok Daniel. Are you coming home soon?" He asks again
"Yep, we should be there in a few minutes."
"Ok! I'll be waiting!"
I laugh and hang up. June stirs next to me and I flinch but she doesn't wake up. The rest of the drive is peaceful and I pull into the driveway 5 minutes later. Eden wasn't kidding. He is quite literally waiting in the front yard, Lucy nowhere to be seen.
I open the door and get out closing it quietly and leaving June inside. Eden hears the car and turns toward me, grinning. I run at my brother, enveloping him in a hug. "Hi" we both say at the same time and laugh.
"I don't think you know how happy I am to see you happy." I tell him. He wraps his arms tighter around me and pulls me down into the grass with him. We lay down side by side, giggling.
Soon we both go quiet, staring up at the night sky. "What did you do on your date?" He asks me.
"We got lunch, went to the beach, and played some laser tag. I totally got my ass kicked by June" I say and he scoffs. "Where's Lucy?"
"Oh she's inside. She knew you were coming so she told me to come out here and wait."
"I like her. What do you think? You warming up to her?" I ask him
He shrugs. "I guess. I had a lot of fun today but it's just not the same."
"Same as what?"
"Same as you." He says and I huff a laugh.
"Not everybody can be as awesome as me."
He shoves me. "You know what I mean."
"I do. I know what you mean. Not everyone's your brother, but that's ok."
"I know it's ok, I just wish I didn't have to interact with people that aren't you and June."
"You know, pretty soon you're gonna have to go back to school." I say and he shakes his head vigorously. "I know you can do it Eden. I'll help you."
