When I pull into the parking lot Day looks a lot less stressed. He had his eyes closed the whole ride and I put on one of my playlists.
The lot is full of people, all going about their business. It feels like other students should be just as stressed as Day and I but they aren't. To them, this is just a normal Monday.
We climb out and Day clutches my hand, walking slowly towards the front entrance. We are making our way towards our first class when someone calls Day's name. We both turn around and the principal is running towards us down the hallway.
When he gets to us, he reaches out and tries to place a hand on Day's shoulder but he flinches away. Principal Smith rolls his shoulders and speaks anyways. "Daniel, I am very sorry for your loss. How are you doing?"
"How do you think I'm doing?" Day asks. "It's probably worse than that."
I wrap my arm around his waste and we turn away from him. "I've never liked him." Day murmurs in my ear when we are out of earshot.
I nod, "Same."
When we get to class, the teacher gives us sympathetic looks but none of the other students pay us any attention. It's actually very nice.
Day spends almost the whole class spacing out and I have to nudge him a few times to get his attention. At lunch I can tell that the stress levels that were so low have climbed very high. He consistently runs his hand through his hair and it's beginning to look greasy. As he goes to do it for the 7th time in 5 minutes to grab his wrist. "Talk to me." I tell him, holding eye contact.
He wrings his hands, pulling each finger in turn, a tic he learned from me. "Day, talk. Distract yourself." He shakes his head, unable to speak. "Come on. Freaking out at school isn't going to do anything for Eden. If you really need to, you should just call Lucy."
He whips his head up then grabs his phone, dialing numbers faster than I thought possible. He puts it on speaker like when the hospital called. It rings a few times then I hear Lucy's voice. "Hello?"
Day takes a deep shaking breath. "Hello Lucy, I just wanted to check up on you guys. How are things over there?"
"Oh I'm glad you called, Eden won't talk to me. He's fine otherwise but he's hiding in his room." She sounds stressed out.
"Ok," Day sighs, he sounds the opposite of Lucy, he sounds relieved. "Can you give him the phone?"
"Sure." We hear some rustling then she says, "Eden, your brother is on the phone, do you want to talk to him?" Then there's more movement and Eden's shaky voice. He sounds like he's been crying and my heart melts for him.
"Daniel?"
"Hey kid, you ok?"
"I am now." He says and then his voice breaks.
"Oh Eden, it's ok, I'm fine, you're fine, June's fine."
"Yep, I'm here, I'm good." I pipe in.
Eden doesn't say anything so Day speaks again. "If you want, we can just stay on the phone for our whole lunch period."
"Yes. Yes please."
"Ok I'm going to set the phone on table and June and I are going to talk, if you need anything just say so."
"Ok," Eden sniffles.
He puts it down and gives me a look. I clear my throat. "So you guys are moving into the apartment today?" I ask trying to sound as normal as possible for Eden's sake.
"Yep! Do you want to help. We can work on that trig homework afterwords."
"Definitely."
We fall into a peaceful silence. I stand up and move around the table, sitting next to Day and resting my head on his shoulder. "Today has exhausted me. We're two weeks in and I already can't wait for thanksgiving break." I tell him.
He smiles at me, "Oh my god me too. The classes we chose are going to be the death of me. I don't understand anything Mrs. Porter said in trig."
"I can help you if you want." I say, math has always made more sense to me than it did for Day. "As long as you help me with the english paper, you're better at that kind of stuff than me."
"Sure." He says turning and giving me a kiss on the cheek. I move my head at the last moment so he kisses my mouth. He smiles against me and somewhere in the cafeteria someone wolf whistles. I whip my head up, hitting Day's nose in the process.
Half of the cafeteria is looking at us. "Who did that?!" I shout. Some random kid who've I've only talked to like once in my life named Jake raises his hand. "Jake, don't be an asshole!" I shout across the room.
"June, we've all been saying you two should get together for years now and it finally happened. The ship has sailed! I think I get to be an asshole."
"No you don't!" My voice carries well and now the entire sophomore class is grinning at me.
"Yes we do! You guys were blind dumbasses for like 5 years. But now," He shakes his head laughing. "Now, I think you deserve a round of applause. Everyone, give it up for June and Daniel who finally realized what idiots they were being and got together. All it took was a mysterious week long absence."
Everybody stands up and starts clapping, even the teachers join in. I look over at Day who is sitting in the same spot, legs crossed and smirking at me. "It was not a mysterious absence!"
"Um, yes it was. You guys both just left in the middle of lunch and didn't come back." I snicker.
"Whatever you want to tell yourself." I lean down and kiss Day deeply. Everyone ooos and ahs and Jake whistles again. I can hear Eden giggling over the phone. I'm glad our experience lightened his mood. "Mind your own business." I say, waving my hand at the rest of the students. "Go about your day, leave us alone." Everyone laughs but eventually turns away and stops paying attention to what we do.
"Did you hear that Eden?" Day laughs.
"Yep, you guys are the talk of the school." We giggle and munch on our food. "Can we finish the first lord of the rings tonight?" Eden asks after a few minutes.
"Oh my god yes! We got him hooked Day! He likes it!" I almost shout. "Eden you have great taste in movies. Also yes, we can definitely finish it."
"Awesome!" Just then the bell rings.
"Eden, we need to go now." Day says worry flashing over his face again.
Eden sucks in a breath. "I'm sorry, I wish we could stay on the phone, I really do, but we can't have phones out in class." I say.
"I know. Just come home right after school." He sounds distressed again.
"We will, I promise." Day says. " I really need to hang up kid." Students are beginning to file out and our next class is all the way on the other side of the school.
"Byeeee" I say and Day ends the call with a shaky breath.
I grab his hand and we make our way to class. The rest of the day goes smoothly and when the final bell rings we both hop out of our chairs and practically run out to the car. I can almost see the emotion radiating off of him. "Want me to drive?" I ask him.
He nods, "Yes please." I climb into the driver seat and pull out, swerving so I don't hit students.
When we get to my street I ask him, "My house or yours?"
"I think they're at your house." I pull into my driveway and grab my keys, hopping out and unlocking the door for him. "Eden!" Daniel calls. There's no answer. "Hmm, I guess they must be at my place." He gives me a worried look. "They didn't say anything about going over there."
"How about you stay here and I'll go check at your apartment." I suggest.
"Sounds good. Be fast." He says. I give him a quick kiss and cup his cheek.
"It'll be ok. Try not to freak out to much." I say to him then turn and jog across the street. I turn into the parking lot and climb up the stairs. Using Day's keys, I unlock this door. "Eden! Lucy?" I call.
No one answers.
