rain

FRIDAY:

I'm awakened by the loud sound of thunder crashing, and I rub my eyes. The bay window is fogged up with mist and rain, the trees swaying and the rain pelting onto the cottage. I get up and throw on a jacket over my pajamas, which consisted of shorts and a t-shirt. I go to the bathroom to get ready, hearing another crash of thunder.

When I head downstairs, Niki is already up, cradling Cinder, while sipping her coffee. "Hey," I say, watching as she turns towards me. "Oh, hey!" Cinder meows loudly, and we both chuckle. "How long has it been since it's rained this hard?" I ask Niki, and she shrugs. "I forgot. It's probably been too long though."

I nod, and we both study the window, watching as the dark clouds emit rain. "Weren't you supposed to be working today?" Niki asks me and I glance down at my phone, seeing a text message from my boss. As I read the message, a surge of relief flows through me. "Nope, not anymore. Apparently, it's supposed to rain really hard today, so they're excusing everyone from work." I answer, and Niki takes a glance at the message, reading it quickly before nodding her head.

I start to make myself breakfast, toasting some bread before spreading cream cheese over it. "Any plans today?" I ask her and she shakes her head. "I was planning to go to the local store to get some fertilizer for our new plants, but in this weather, the road is going to be impossible to drive." Niki sighs and I agree with her. "Not to mention, the last time I drove out in weather like this, I nearly crashed into a stoplight." I joked and Niki laughs. "I remember that."

We chat a few more moments longer, before Niki's phone rings. She excuses herself and she picks up, balancing the phone on her shoulder as she sets her mug down and lets Cinder free from her arms. "Hello?" She asks and I take a bite out of my toast.

After a few seconds, Niki's eyebrows furrow, and she glances at the window. "Are you sure-?"

Then she pauses and I wait, watching as she lets out a small sigh. "Yeah, yeah, I'll make sure to deliver it. Yeah, no problem." Niki then hangs up, and I watch as she rubs her forehead. "Hey, what's wrong?" I ask her and set my plate down. "Nothing, nothing. I'll get it taken care of." Niki responds and now it's my turn to furrow my brows.

"In this weather? What is it?" I press on and Niki shrugs slightly. "I have to pick something up for a friend." I inhale slightly, and I pretend to act nonchalantly. "I could do it for you." Niki looks at me with a wild expression. "What? No, no, no, it's fine." "No, I could do it. I mean, I'm not really planning to do anything today besides reading and sleeping." I continue and Niki sighs.

"y/n, that means a lot to me, but I can't ask you to do something that big." I take another bite of my toast. "Niki, I honestly would not mind doing it. Besides, see it as a little thank you for buying my pc." I try to bribe her, and she places a hand on her hip. "y/n-." She tries again but I raise a finger.

"Name me the place, time, and item, and I will get it delivered." Niki stares at me a few seconds longer, her stare hard on me. I let a bit of my confidence falter under her stare and she finally gives up. "Okay, okay, fine. I have to pick up a few things from the store. I'll write down a list for you." Niki then opens a drawer from one of the counters, and she takes a notepad and pen out.

I watch as she neatly writes down the list, which isn't too big. Then, she hands me the list and I skim through it.

-set of cups
-a few washcloths and towels
-set of plates
-cat food
-toilet paper
-throw pillows

I nod and Niki tells me that I have to leave in about an hour, and then tells me a bit more information on where to get the items and the address of her friend's house. I hug her, which she reluctantly returns back and I head upstairs, a bit excited that I can finally have a good reason to leave the house. I decide to change into a white tank top and grey sweats, adding a black jacket, zipping up half-way, and letting one side fall off my shoulder.
