One thing I learnt in my life was never to trust men and no, this wasn't some break up story, but all the men I was ever involved with were liars. The big lies and the small lies, the well-thought-of lies and the involuntary lies, they were all lies to either cover their asses or make themselves look good in front of others. Once they told a single lie, they'd need another lie to cover up the first and that's how it'd become a circle of crazy lies if you do not call them out to end the craziness.
I mean how could you flirt with another woman just minutes before proposing to another? And not just anyone, he proposed to my boss. I was being ridiculous. Why did I feel stupid and lied to when I didn't even know this guy's name, it shouldn't have affected me this much. Plus, I didn't know a damn thing about him, well, except that he was interested in red heads and he happened to be marrying a blonde. A very pretty blonde who turned out to be one of the most graceful females I'd ever come across in my entire life. She dressed like a goddess and talked like she owned the world, she even smelled like she'd been bathing in rainbows and flowers. Her skin glowed like it wasn't made for this earth.
"Aaron Sanders, everyone, my son has finally decided to tie the knot." A man said, coming up to where Andrea and her new fiancé stood, he was holding a champagne flute up as if to make a toast.
I looked between the two men. Back and forth, back and forth. The striking resemblance between father and son. I never knew James Sanders of Sanders Records had a son. Not until this very moment. How could I have missed it? The only difference in their features was their hair. James had salt and pepper hair while Aaron's was a dark blonde. With them standing side by side, James was basically an older version of his son. Both men were really good looking.
The newly engaged couple shared a kiss and a round of applause went off again. I wondered why I was imagining what his lips felt like. I shook that thought off and crossed my arms as I watched the display from the corner.
Mr Sanders downed his entire glass of champagne and went to hug the couple. The flashes of cameras were almost blinding and I turned to look for the exit again. I needed air. It was a long night and my feet were starting to hurt, I still had work to do so I decided to go up to the office to get a few things done before I retired for the night. The exhibition was almost over and people were starting to leave the building.
I guessed the proposal was part of the plan to spark up the showcase. The tabloids and news stations would be buzzing by morning and I needed to create good content to add up to the news.
By the time I was done with my work for the night, I made my way to the elevator just as I grabbed my things from my station. Gabby was around, so she called if I needed a ride. I didn't have a car yet. The money my mom left me when I moved here, part of it was to be used to buy a car, instead, I saved it up. So now, Gabby and I rode together most of the time, plus it was pretty late to take the bus or a taxi.
The offices were empty at this hour as everyone had left, except the few late night workers and janitor.
A voice echoed from the stairwell as I stood there waiting for the elevator to arrive. It sounded like a man's. A very upset man's voice. He was talking harshly to someone and I couldn't help but step closer to listen.
"...know now you can finally quit that painting of yours and focus more on the real business," one of the voices said.
"I can't quit painting, father, it's what I love most in this world and please can we talk about this some other time?" A vaguely familiar voice replied in an almost hushed tone but I could hear because it echoed and I felt almost terrible for eves dropping. Almost. That voice had probably followed me everywhere throughout the day and I think I was hearing it everywhere, it practically drew me in to listen.
