"I could have done it, father!"
I could have done it!"
For you!"
For all of us..."
His voice was brittle and hoarse.
More tears were filling Loki's eyes. This was the end.
"No, Loki."
Loki squinted his eyes at the Allfather. He wasn't enough to him, and he never would be.
"No, Loki." Thor begged, just once, but nothing he could say would be able to change his younger brother's mind.
And then his brother uncurled his fingers from the shaft and let go.
"No!" Thor screamed in despair.
He stared at the figure that was gradually becoming smaller and smaller until the dot in the distance disappeared.
"No," Odin said in a gravelly voice.
He waited for it to come back.
"Thor."
He turned his head to look behind his father. Maybe Loki would be standing behind the Allfather, about to tell him this was some horrid joke.
But the raven wasn't there.
"Thor. Pull yourself up, my son."
"But Loki, how- Why- No... Why did you say that to him, father?"
No answer.
"Why!" Thor screamed, the tears that were in his eyes finally falling freely onto his face.
And suddenly nothing made sense.
Thor felt his eyes filling with more tears that he blinked away, trying to keep them at bay. Trying to keep the storm away.
Thor pulled himself up. What would mother think if Odin did not come back with both sons. One loss was enough...

Walking back to the Palace was more uncomfortable for Thor than a whole lot of mortals watching him fail to lift his own hammer.
Right, hammer.
He had gotten so used to it that sometimes he forgets he's even holding it.
Now, looking at the weapon, he wished it never existed. Things would have gone very differently if it wasn't a thing.

When Odin returned to Frigga she saw that he only came back with one son.
He only came back with one son.
He only-
He was supposed to come back with both of them.
Trying to stay calm and composed she watches as Thor started picking up his place, almost running to her.
"Mother," he said lowly.
She gently embraced him.
The moment she heard Thor's soft sobs the walls she built around her heart broke down and she began to cry as well. The Allmother noticed that her spouse wasn't in the empty room with them anymore.
"It's just you, Thor. You're all alone..."
"He's dead."
She hugged him tighter.
