All throughout his whole life, Loki Laufeyson– No... Loki Odinson had done absolutely everything the right way. Or maybe... the way he'd thought things should be.
Nevertheless, everything seemed to work out just fine for everyone. Even when he received the short end of the stick and was forced to hold on tight (which, sometimes he purposefully let go), the world around him looked all okay.
Until Thanos decided to move forward with his plan now.
And that left Loki with two initial thoughts.
The Avengers had everything under control.
And...
Thanos has the high ground in this battle, how could the Avengers ever defeat him?
Loki's twisted mind delved into many different thoughts and memories of how he'd done it in the past and if he could even help half of the universe from the horrendous fate they were about to meet.
No, there's nothing for him to do. Just go, and don't mess it up. Hide. Ignore it all. Alone is what you're supposed to be. Thor said it himself; he'd better leave because his path wasn't entwined with his no longer.
Also, what kind of a person would like to see their dead brother back in the land of the living the third time? Watching a sibling being brutally choked to death isn't something you'd recover from especially since it was right after his best friend and half his people were mercilessly slayed.
Anyhow...
When he heard the screams and cries for help, messages explaining the phenomenon, and all those distress signals, Loki forced himself to turn the little ship around and head straight to Midgard.
He wasn't completely heartless, his only had been frozen over with neglect from those whom he loved.
The god placed a hand on his chest and listened to the irregular heartbeat.
It was there.
Surely.

Loki had been traveling for days. Due to the isolation it could've been months -- it surely felt like it, but he'd been counting the hours the best he could manage.
To entertain himself he'd read some books and practiced on his magic; learning he had more abilities then before due to the fact most of the reading material in his pocket dimension were spell books.
Helpful.
The Aesir placed a cloaking spell not only on the spacecraft but on himself too.
When approaching the planet, he fought back any hesitation and landed on the soft grass.
He ignored the ugly orange spaceship nearby but was careful enough not to idiotically land on it or crash into it.
It was truly no surprise Terra had some beings from other planets in the universe, maybe they had received some much needed help... Hopefully.
When Loki stood up, he practically stumbled forward into a wall.
Stepping on the soft grass was another story. His knees buckled and he collapsed on all fours. He really should've been moving around more, but the pod-like spaceship sure had little walking room.
Once he scrambled to his feet, whipping his head back, Loki tilted his head in astonishment and a small smile graced his lips. The Avengers Compound looked somewhat lit up but it felt like no one was ever going to come and confront the man who just walked out of the spaceship.
New York's used to this.
Loki eventually got inside unsuspected by teleporting through; still invisible to the eye. Then he sent out an illusion to look around and navigate where exactly the Avengers were located.
Once he'd gotten a glimpse of the group, the ebony haired god transported his physical body to the traveling illusion and practically began sprinting.
Running into the room, he calls out for Thor, but the glowing rectangle that conjures itself from thin air in front of him stops him and he halts.
With Loki frozen in place, he decides with some uncertainty to survey the room full of tired and beaten heroes. Some are old, some are new. Familiar and unfamiliar faces also stare up at him, surprise visible on their facades.
He slowly raises his hands and stops when his elbows reach eye level. Gently, he places his hands on his head full of messy black curls and inhales sharply.
Not what he wanted to happen.
One of them states something along the lines of branches, variants and violations; but it all goes past Loki as he barely comprehends her words. Instead, he bites back tears and shuts his eyes for a few seconds before opening then back again.
"We came for you too late because we couldn't locate you. So, it's time to go now, Variant."
Thor has finally gotten up from his seating area and Loki manages to make eye contact with his dear brother.
I'm sorry.
He only hopes he can read the look in his slightly widened eyes. The light stare does not spark fear -- but an apology.
Then he sees him move quicker than lightning.
Whack!
One of the people -- who he assumes is an agent or worker of some sort, immediately falls down to the ground, unconscious with Thor standing over him.
A blond agent steps forward to the god of thunder, weapon raised and ready to use with a quick twist.
"Leave him, he's not what we came for."
Loki blinks a few times, everything he'd ever wanted to say to his older brother is stuck in his throat and he can only bare to stutter out an apology.
"I– I'm sorry, Thor. For what... For what it's worth–"
And he's whisked away. Shoved through the teleportation door and gone.
Little did they know where exactly he'd end up at in the end.
I walked out of the room I was in and an this interesting idea popped into my head.
I automatically clapped my hands...
Smiled.
And walked back into the room.
I adore dramatic scenes, don't you?
