As I approached the crowded platform, suitcase in hand; a rather beautiful chocolate coloured vintage trunk with teal coloured straps attached by rusty brass buckles, gifted to me by my aunt last Christmas, I heard my name "Y/N!" as my best friend Draco Malfoy practically pounced onto me, making me drop my trunk in the process. "Watch it!" I exclaimed before squeezing back warmly. After reaching down to pick my luggage up from the ground, I followed him eagerly onto the train.
Draco was looking surprisingly excited to be going back to Hogwarts, which I assume means he had another disagreement with his father over the spring break. He seemed to always be getting into petty fights with his father, from what he has told me in the past. I can only imagine how horribly cruel that man must be to have such a negative effect on his son, who is usually so confident when it comes to dealing with confrontation of any kind. I could completely sympathise with Draco there though as I did not get on well with my parents at all.
If you can even call them parents.
Now inside the train, we made our way to the far carriage reserved for Slytherin students and took our seats in the empty boothe by a reasonably clean window, shortly followed by Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, Malfoy's possy who took on the role of his personal bodyguards, quite effectively I might add. The scent of matured leather and dust filled my nose cavities as my rear made contact with the stiff brown cushion. The three of them started catching up animatedly as I eyed the last students on the platform saying their farewells and stepping on board the Hogwarts Express. It made me sad sometimes seeing parents sending off their children, when mine didn't bother driving me to the station let alone say goodbye to me when I left the house. At this thought I sighed rather loudly, making the boys turn their heads in my direction.
"Y/N how was your half term?" Draco asked me in a mocking tone, full well knowing from the letters which I had sent him, that I had been bored to death at a camp my parents sent me to as an excuse to have me out of the house. I rolled my eyes and gave him a passive aggressive nudge as my response, to which he just smirked.
He looks rather cute when he does that I thought to myself sheepishly.
Draco and I had been friends since around year two of being at Hogwarts and I will always remember the day we were forced to sit together in potions class. At first I didn't like him, I thought he came across as cocky and arrogant, his wealthy reputation didn't help. It was clear he didn't want anything to do with me and I felt the same way until we randomly started bonding over quidditch. I didn't play but my grandfather used to be really into it before he sadly passed away, five years ago now. It was actually Draco who had comforted me during those dark times. He had shown a far more caring and understanding side of himself which I hadn't before thought he was capable of. My grandfather and I were really close and he was the only family member I really considered family.
My parents either didn't pay much attention to me or were wringing me by the neck, both figuratively and physically. I am a constant disappointment to them which they were not afraid to voice every fucking day I was with them. My mother had a miscarriage when I was four years old, and although my memory at four was not as reliable, I certainly remember a time where I felt loved and cared for. Since the miscarriage they seemed to have turned sour and it felt as though their eyes were filled with regret every time they caught sight of me.
I have never really expected much from them as they only ever performed the bare minimum where parenting was concerned, if even that. On my eighteenth birthday, which was at the beginning of the half term just gone, they didn't even get me a card. In fact I am pretty sure they had forgotten about it until I mentioned wanting to have a little get together with some of my friends to celebrate. I had hoped my entry into adulthood would have earned me some respect and persuaded them. I remember all too well how that conversation went down...
