Chasing Darkness (Sequel to Remember Me)

Part Fifteen

"Bennett, is something bothering you?"

Bennett had been extraordinarily quiet for several hours now, seemingly zoning out very frequently. Even while eating lunch, he was quiet while you and Jaya had a lively conversation. You could tell by the solemn look in his eyes that something was wrong. His usually bright eyes have dulled considerably. 

"Bennett?" Jaya calls out for him as well after he doesn't reply to you, "Would you prefer if I drove?"

Bennett shakes his head a few times before turning towards you with a nervous smile plastered onto his face, "S-sorry, I was thinking about something. No, I'm fine to drive."

"I'm glad, but I want to know what's bothering you so much," You prod him, knowing all-to-well that he's not telling you something, "You know that we're here for you. Just talk to us."

"I'm alright, (Y/N). Thanks for worrying about me, but everything is fine," He says before turning back to face the road, both of his hands on the steering wheel, "We should focus on keeping Shadow from getting to Kurapika first. That's what's important here."

"You're important too, Bennett!" You already have a long argument on why Bennett's feelings and thoughts matter so much to you prepared in your head. You take a long breath before you begin your heated debate, however, the sound of your phone's ringtone cuts you off, "We're not finished with this conversation yet."

Bennett lets out a chuckle as a smug grin makes its way onto his face, "Whatever you say, sis."

You only glare at him as you answer the call and hold the phone up against your ear, "Hey, Killua. How have you been?"

"Hey (Y/N), I'm good. Gon, Alluka, and I have been traveling together lately," You can hear Alluka in the background excitedly asking to speak to you, "Hold on, Alluka. You can talk to (Y/N) in a sec."

You let out a chuckle at this, "It has been a while since we last spoke."

"Yeah, she complains whenever I say she has to wait to talk to you," He shushes Alluka again, "You can have your turn to talk to (Y/N) in a second."

"Is something wrong?"

"Nope. Gon and I wanted to ask about the wedding," Gon shouts something in the background, "Jeez, I'll just put the call on speakerphone," The sound of Killua tapping a button on his phone can be heard before you can hear Gon and Alluka clear as day, "Can you hear them, (Y/N)?"

Gon's enthusiastic shouting comes through clearly now, "(Y/N)!!! We can't wait for the wedding! We're excited to see you, Kurapika, and Leorio again!"

"(Y/N), I miss you!! Big brother says we'll get to see you soon though!" Alluka seems to have taken the phone from Killua now as she sounds much louder than him, "I want to watch a movie together like we used to in the hospital!"

"And we will! I miss you all, too. I'm sure Kurapika and Leorio miss you just as much," You reply to them with a large smile on your face, earning a glance from Bennett.

Killua's voice comes through the speaker next as he wonders, "Is Kurapika back from his mission yet?"

"No, he's not finished with his mission, but he's been making really good progress. Hopefully, he'll be home soon and we can set an official date for the wedding," You explain to your good friends.

Gon makes a whining sound before exclaiming, "I hope it's soon! Killua already made us buy wedding presents for you both."

"My present is the best, (Y/N)!" Alluka points out to you, earning a chuckle from you in response, "Big brother helped me wrap it and put a bow on it."
