Chapter Twenty
A/N: alright you guys, a longer chapter. Enjoy!
I floored Annalise's Maxima through the streets of Manhattan rushing to be at Bates' side running stop signs and red lights. My brain was scattered and my heart felt like it was about to burst through my chest.
Two more blocks and I'll be there, Bates.
I zipped through the traffic weaving in and out around other vehicles to make it to the hospital, luckily no police were patrolling the area that I could see or I'd definitely be cited. I came to the last red light and took a left pulling into the hospital parking in the emergency department.
Walking in, I asked the first nurse I saw behind a glass, a heavy woman with short curly red hair wearing thin reading glasses, "excuse me...can you tell me where Bates Ramirez is? He was brought in maybe an hour ago..." My anxiety was peaking as I felt my hands begin to tremble.
She started typing on her computer and said, "and you are?"
"Quinn Alexander... his girlfriend." Yep, that feels right.
"Ma'am, visiting hours ended at--" I cut her off," I already spoke with Dr Ramerro, he said I could visit for a short while." I gave her a smile and she didn't like it one bit. She looked at me coldly, "room 307." She leaned over and hit the buzzer button allowing the double doors to open.
Walking all the way to the other end of the hospital, I found the elevators and smashed the 'up' button approximately five times just to be sure. One set of doors was closing when I seen a hand reach out from the elevator to stop it. "Going up?" I heard a man's voice say then the doors opened back up. "yes, thank you." I walked inside and the doors closed in front of us.
"Third floor please." I said to the tall man I was sharing the elevator with. He had to be in his late fifties, he held a dozen roses with a card.
My ears started to ring from being closed in. One thing I hate more than dog hair is a damn elevator. I hope I don't start to hyperventilate in front of this old man and give him a heart attack. Then we would all be admitted in the hospital. That would be a mess. I held my breath as I counted to ten and by then I heard the 'ding' letting me know I was at my stop.
"Have a good night, Miss." The old man said tipping his hat. I haven't seen that in a while. "Thanks, you too." I replied. I felt like I could have sad that a bit nicer but I was in a major rush.
I walked the hallway and whispered the room numbers to myself as I passed them, 311, 310, 309, 308 and finally 307! I checked the tag on the door to be sure: Bates Ramirez/Dr Ramerro MD
This is it. My heart started thumping inside of my chest so violently that I could almost hear it.
I softly knocked twice then pushed the heavy door open, light from the hallway spilled in the dark room from behind me. I didn't know what to expect, I was so damn nervous.
Then I heard his sweet voice, "you're here." I couldn't answer until I saw his face. Then I noticed a dim light switch on and my heart stopped...
"Of course I did... " My words lodged in my throat.
He was sitting up in the hospital bed with that kissable smirk on his face looking at me. I walked closer to him taking him in and looking at his bruises. There was an IV hanging from his arm strapped to a pole beside him.
His whole left arm was wrapped and in a splint from around his neck to his fingertips. My eyes traveled down over his chest and saw that that was wrapped too from his broken ribs that connected to his arm splint. I'm guessing he saw the worry in my eyes, "a kiss from you would make me feel so much better," that made me smile so big as I leaned in and gave him a lingering kiss on his soft lips.
His lips were so soft.
Backing my face from his, I saw the bruising that took up the left side of his handsome face. Around his eye, was purple and his cheek looked as if he were hit with an iron fist with swelling.
"What happened exactly? I got word of it but didn't know how badly injured you were... " I asked looking him over.
"Some asshole hit me on the driver's side, I didn't even feel my ribs break, Dr said I didn't feel it because of the impact. I'm alright though." He said reassuringly.
He could move his head but only his neck a little. "So, how do you feel?" I asked wanting to hear his voice again. He chuckled at me and said, "sore but not too bad. I probably look worse than I feel." How can he still look so angelic laying in a hospital bed?
"You still look handsome to me." I gave him a smile but I wanted to know more about his condition.
"Dr Ramerro said he had to run more tests on you, did they get back with you with the results?" I asked him sitting in a chair beside his bed.
"I probably won't find out until in the morning, they ran two on me earlier and their going to run two more tomorrow. Come sit with me... " he patted the bed on his right side. I stood and walked around the bed and eased down, he noticed I was being careful. "You won't hurt me, darlin'." He said pulling me close to him causing my cheeks to flush.
I layed on my side with my head on his shoulder, looking up at him, "when will you be able to go home?" He kissed my forehead, "hopefully tomorrow evening or the following morning... but I was hoping you'd pack a bag and stay with me for a bit after I'm discharged."
There's the butterflies.
"I'd love to."
"You can be my nurse until I'm healed," he said with a small smile. I could tell he was tired and sore, his eyes were red and puffy. It's heart breaking seeing him like this.
I carressed his face as I kissed him letting my worries out, just loving this moment with him....that safe and secure feeling returning to me and being wrapped in his strong arms.... knowing that he'll be okay and that it wasn't worse than it actually was.
