Harry's suspension was correct as ther were a good handful of books in the chamber which discussed dragons.
The one which peaked both their interests, was one written by Salazar himself.
As we only know so little about the dragon we must, whenever we should encounter one, show it respect. The dragon, I believe, was one of the first magical creatures to be created. They tend to live isolated and away from human interaction, which is why we do not know much about them. I have decided to therefore try to find out more about dragons myself, which is why I left Brittan for two years on a quest to study dragons. I have discovered many things, the most interesting being that I have a strong suspicion that dragons are somewhat related to snakes. The basilisk being a creature with aspects of both dragon and serpent. This leads to the extraordinary discovery that dragons understand parseltoungue. Dragons may not be able to speak parseltoungue like a serpent, but I do believe that they can understand the language.
This was probably one of the best tactics of beating the dragon. Although there was a chance that the dragon might not actually understand parseltoungue, as Salazar wrote that he suspected that dragons could understand. Not that they actually did.
This was the cause for the other four books: a back up plan incase they don't understand.
There was a spell in one of them which would be able to put a fully grow dragon to sleep for around two hours, depending on the type and size of dragon. Tom decided to practice that spell just incase the dragon doesn't know what parseltoungue is.
Harry, Tom thought, wasn't being much of a help. While he was looking through books on dragons, Harry was rummaging around the medical books.
"Hey Tom, I think I found the solution to my problem," Harry called from a couple of bookshelves away.
"And what would that be," Tom said in a monotonous voice.
"The way to change the spell, I've been trying to do it for ages," Harry said excitedly, "now all I need to do I test it on a few animals and then it would be complete."
"That's great, but what type of dragons do you think there will be in the first task?"
"I have no idea, but we should go to the great hall now if we don't want to miss dinner."
...
A few days later it was finally the first task. After breakfast all three champions were taken to a different room, while everyone else were led to a large stadium outside past the quiddich pitch.
Harry and the other Knights sat close to the front so they could easily see what was going to happen.
There was a large rocky area which would be where the task would happen.
"Don't worry Harry, Tom will be fine," Abraxas reassured, noticing Harry's tension.
"How do you know that, these are going to be real, fire breathing dragons," Harry said panicked.
"Harry, the cup chose Tom over everyone else including the fifth, sixth and seventh years. The cup chose him because he's has the best chance at winning the tournament for Hogwarts," Abraxas explained, still trying to calm Harry down.
"Best chance," Harry echoed, "isn't that reassuring," he added on sarcastically.
Before Abraxas could reply three dragon handlers brought the first dragon into the arena.
