When the three of them entered Gringotts, Dumbledore walked up to a short wrinkly creature. Harry asked Tom, through their mind link, what he thought the things were.
Tom had no idea.
The two boys stood dumbly behind Dumbledore as he took out some money for both of them. They learnt by observation that the things were called goblins, Tom and Harry decided to try and stay on their good side as they were clearly in control of the money transactions. They also guessed that Dumbledore wasn't very fond of the goblins, as it took a long time for him to get the money and because the goblin kept frowning at Dumbledore.
Finally, when Dumbledore was done and had two identical brown pouches with some coins in it. He handed one to Tom and one to Harry. "The large gold coins are called galleons, the silver ones are sickles, and the bronze ones are called knuts. We'll go to get your books first, let's go," Dumbledore said, leading the way out of the bank and into the busy street. They walked to a shop called 'Flourish and Blots' where Dumbledore gave them a list of books they would need to buy. "You each need to buy the books on this list. Why they teach you so much pointless subjects, I don't know," Dumbledore said.

"Well, Headmaster Dippet wanted everyone to get a taste of all the subjects. At the end of the first year, you can drop two subjects and another two at the end of the second year. After you O.W.Ls you can drop up to nine more; you only need to take three subjects for your N.E.W.Ts," Dumbledore explained distastefully, obviously not liking the system. However, to Tom and Harry, it seemed like a good system, especially to those who never heard of the magical world.
After the two boys paid for the books, they walked out of the shop carrying books. There were so many that it piled up to their chins. Dumbledore then leads them to a shop where they could buy a trunk and bag. They entered a small, dusty shop with trunks lined up on the walls. Tom purchased an old, rustic looking trunk with a shrinking charm on it so that it could be carried in his pocket, and Harry bought a dark blue backpack with an extension charm on it. They put their books in them and followed Dumbledore through the busy crowds to the next shop.
Dumbledore led them to a potions shop where they bought all the ingredients they would need for their first year, cauldron and some glass vials. Dumbledore then asked them if they wanted a pet to bring to Hogwarts to which they both said no, the reason being that they didn't have much money to care for it and with the money they had leftover they would rather spend it on more books.
"Well, then boys, all that's left to buy are your wands." Dumbledore said, leading them to a shop with a sign saying 'Olivanders'. Inside the shop was covered in a thick layer of dust, and it wasn't well lit, they could bearly see what was in front of them.
They stood just a few feet from the door, waiting to see if there would be a shopkeeper to help them with buying their wand. Soon enough, a creepy old man emerged from the shadows and stood in front of them. "Well, hello, Tom, Harry. I've been expecting you. Brought them right on time, Professor Dumbledore," he said.
