Harry woke up with the familiar warmth of Tom next to him. Harry carefully unwound himself from Tom's arms and out of bed. He had stuff to do. It was early in the morning, everyone else was still in bed including the caretakers. Harry quickly and quietly went outside, despite the freezing weather and layer of snow on the ground. He ran to an old oak tree in the corner of the garden, just next to the boundary line of the orphanage grounds. In the tree, there was a hollow by its base. Harry crouched down and pulled out a crumpled, old paper brown bag. Harry pulled out a necklace he had spent the majority of his time on this last week. Harry gently held the thin strip of leather with a pendent he made himself on it. The pendant was a smoothened small pebble with a hole, made by Harry's powers, where the leather was threaded through. There were also two pieces of longish grass which wound around the pebble. The final touch was Harry using his powers to make the strands of grass stay where they are, which left the feeling of his powers on the necklace.
Harry was putting the necklace back in the bag when Nagini slithered through the snow towards him. Nagini didn't stop when she approached Harry, she proceeded to wind up Harry's warm body and curl up around his neck and chest. 'What's the little hatchling doing in the cold!' Nagini hissed at Harry.
'Today is Tom's birthday, I've made him a present.' Harry replied. stroking Nagini's scales gently.
'It's Tommy's hatchday! Why did no one tell Nagini? Nagini needs to get a hatchday present for Tommy. Wait here hatchling, Nagini will be back.' She hissed and slithered off Harry to go and get a present.
Harry sighed and stood next to the tree waiting for Nagini to return. A shiver ran down his spine as he felt the wind blow through his thin pyjamas.
When she slithered back she had a dead rat in her jaws. 'This is for Tommy.' She hissed happily. Harry took the dead rat from Nagini and promised that he would give it to Tom.
Harry wandered back to the orphanage with the brown bag in one hand and the other was holding the rat's tail at arm's length away. The rat was bloody and starting to decay; it was disgusting. Harry went back to his room, where Tom was still sleeping soundly. Harry put the items down on the desk and jumped onto Tom waking him up. Tom woke up with a jump a squeak; which he will deny to the end of his life. Harry smiled when Tom glared at him.
"Did you have to wake me up like that?" Tom groaned.
"Yes, I did." Harry replied happily, "It's your birthday so, Happy Birthday!" He squealed.
Tom sat up in his bed and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. Harry took the two presents and sat next to Tom on the bed. "This is from Nagini," he said dropping the bloody rat on to his lap and snickering at his disgusted face. "You will be grateful and thank her later," Harry said sternly. "And this is from me," he smiled, putting the paper bag on Tom's lap.
Meanwhile downstairs a middle-aged man in purple robes entered the orphanage.
Mrs Cole walked to the entrance where the strange man was, "Hello, welcome to Wool's Orphanage. Are you interested in adoption?" She asked with a fake smile on her face.
"No, no," he chuckled, "I'm actually here to visit Tom and Harry Wool."
Mrs Cole's smile vanished, her face was blank however her eyes showed her fear, "And who are you, may I ask?" she said with a tiny tremble in her voice.
"My name is Professor Dumbledore and I wish to offer Tom and Harry a place in a boarding school. They've both been on the waiting list since they were born and have both been granted a place."
Mrs Cole was speechless, no one ever wanted to talk to the two boys let alone offer them a place in a fancy-sounding school. She wondered if she should warn the man about the freaky things the boys did. She should, but then he might not take the boys with him, if he took the boys then she wouldn't have to have them for most of the year. She decided that she wouldn't tell the man about the freaks. She would tell him everything to make him want to take them away.
