The beautiful sight of Rivendell came into view and I felt my whole body relax. Throughout the short ride I had just sat back contentedly and let Elrond tell me all of what had happened in Rivendell since I had left many years ago. Not much had happened; they were a quiet and peaceful people. I wondered how my friends were and grew even more excited at the prospect of seeing them. We were going to have to spend many nights drinking and catching up with one another.
"How long do you plan to stay?"
Elrond's voice brought me out of my daydreams.
"At the moment, I do not know but I think I would like to stay for more than just a few days. Maybe a few months. I should think that Lindallë and Árion would be highly upset with me if I were to arrive and then leave just after a few days."
"Well know that you are always welcome to stay as long as you wish. You can even settle in Rivendell if that were to be your wish."
I let out a soft chuckle. There had been many times when I wanted to stay in Rivendell permanently but a small part of me always urged me to keep moving and to never settle. Whether that be because of my longing for adventure or just the fact that I could never feel like I was home, I don't know, but never in my life had I settled anywhere for too long. I tried not to dwell on these thoughts though; they always depressed me knowing that I never truly fit in anywhere and that I was always searching for something that I could never find.
"Thank you, Lord Elrond, I truly am grateful to you for your kindness and all that you have done for me, but you know that would not be possible for me."
I heard him sigh. I knew that he was trying to help me find my place in this large world but whatever I was searching for could not be found in Rivendell, and he knew this.
"As you wish," he said sadly.
Before we could carry on further with our conversation, our attention was drawn away by a strange sight. I could feel the confusion from Elrond as he grappled with the fact that there were a bunch of dwarves crowding the entrance to his beautiful city. I probably should have warned him ahead of time and alerted him to the reason I was actually here.
Elrond turned his head back to face me, his eyebrow raised. I looked at the surrounding area trying to avoid his accusing gaze.
"Should I even ask?"
"Probably not," I mumbled.
He just laughed and I could see a tiny glint of something mischievous in his eyes.
"Shall we give those dwarves a warm, Elven welcome?"
I just laughed in return as my answer.
Elrond shouted out an order to rest of the Elves following him and we picked up our pace. One of the soldiers blew on the horn to announce our arrival as our horses leapt into a hard gallop. In perfect synchronisation the soldiers led their horses and circled the dwarves. I tried to stifle my laugh as I saw the look of panic on the dwarves' faces.
"You are wicked," I whispered to Elrond.
Elrond let out a small laugh before he jumped down from his horse and helped me down as well. He then turned to greet Gandalf. I lifted my head proudly as I felt the dwarves' confused gazes fall on me. The last they had seen of me was when I was fighting for my life.
"Strange for Orcs to come so close to our border. Something, or someone has drawn them near."
I turned my head back to Gandalf and Elrond.
"That may have been us," said Gandalf. He looked at me and let out a huge sigh of relief. "And you! When I say to follow me I don't mean that you must stay behind and singlehandedly fight a pack of orcs!"
