The day that the two were deeply dreading arrived with stormy winds and pelting summer rain. Most of the month of June went by in a flurry of exams and studying. However, in the early hours of mid-June, Lucy was sure she was not the only one who was restless. She was even more miserable to notice Draco's absence from breakfast that morning, and later in the afternoon, Defense Against the Dark Arts. The students all stood in a line outside the classroom door awaiting their examination. Blaise was sitting upon the cold stone floor looking rather concerned.
"Blimey, Malfoy chose the wrong day to miss, Snape will have his head!" Blaise remarked as the greasy-haired professor opened the door to the classroom and stepped out silently into the hallway.
"I shall call you in one by one for your Defense Against the Dark Arts examination," Snape declared, looking bored. "Armstrong! You first,"
Lucy furrowed her brow and followed Professor Snape into the classroom.
"Draw your wand," he merely stated before turning around with his own wand pointing directly at her. A red wiz of light shot out of his wand at her, and the girl quickly swiped her own wand to protect herself.
"Bloody hell!" she cried out at him with shock.
"Hm, impressive," Snape sneered. "Now, update me on your endeavors with the Malfoy boy,"
"It's happening—tonight," she informed him with worry lacing her tone. "He doesn't want me to be a part of it—"
"Then you shall not be, Ms. Armstrong," Snape stated mildly. "Mr. Malfoy may make an exceptional bully, but he is not a murderer,"
"I know that," Lucy said, her voice trembling.
"Now go, you have passed your exam," Snape said with the curl of his lip.
"What—?" she began, seeing as she had not even started it.
"Go, before I change my mind, Armstrong! "
Lucy stood dumbfounded for a moment until Snape irritably ushered her to leave the classroom. She quietly exited, sending her friends a shrug before returning to the common room. Just as she approached the sleek door, it swung open from the inside. Lucy was face to face with Draco, whose skin looked paler than normal, and his eyes were filled with worry.
"Shit," he mumbled, grasping to her sides to steady her from the near-collision. "Lucy? What are you doing out of the dormitory?"
"Today was the Dark Arts exam," she told him quite plainly.
"Yeah, well, bloody good that will do for us now," he retorted sourly, running a hand through his platinum blonde hair. "You need to get inside—I have to go prepare to—you know—"
"Please, let me go with you," she pleaded, intertwining their hands together as they stood in the doorway.
"No," he insisted firmly. "If anything happened to you-I-"
He did not need to finish his sentence to prove that he deeply cared for the girl more than she possibly knew.
"Don't you understand?" she softly replied. "I—I love you. If I lose you, then I have nothing!"
Draco's eyes widened at her confession.
"Please, Lucy, just stay here," he begged, stepping past her.
He stared at her with fear behind his swirling eyes before pulling her tight against his chest. The smell of his cologne caused a wave of peace to wash over Lucy. She looked up at him with tearful eyes, causing the boy to reach down and place a tender kiss onto her lips. Suddenly, she felt her whole body grow stiff and immobile. She began to fall over like a plank of wood before he carefully caught her. Draco had hexed her.
"I'm really sorry about this, but I can't take any chances love," he guiltily told her, picking up her frozen body and carrying her into the dimly lit common room. Luckily for him, it was empty, and he had no issue carrying the limp girl into his dormitory. He pressed a kiss upon her cheek before gazing at her face, a sad expression frozen in time upon it.
"I love you too," he murmured, so quietly that Lucy was unsure if he had actually said it back but as her eyes flickered over to the spot he had just stood, the door to the dormitory closed. It was in that moment that she realized she would do anything for that blonde boy.
However, she was instead left to stare at the green ceiling of his four-poster bed, her entire body unable to move. She wanted to scream, cry and shout, yet her body failed her miserably. Even worse was the fact that none of the Slytherin boys would retire to their dormitory until long after dinner. Time seemed to drag by agonizingly slow, and Lucy felt absolutely hopeless. She had absolutely no idea what time it was, or what was going on.
It felt like eternity had went by until someone walked inside the dark dormitory room, and walked right past Draco's bed. Theo. His brown hair was messy as ever as he came to a halt.
The boy did a double take, placing a hand on her shoulder as his eyes wide as he realized Lucy was stuck rigidly in place. "What the fuck? Lucy?"
He quickly performed the counter-curse, and Lucy was alive once more with movement. She quickly sat up on the edge of the bed, tucking her hair behind her ears.
"Merlin, did Draco hex you?" asked Theo in surprise.
Lucy nodded with a sour expression on her face. "What time is it?"
"Er—probably like half past nine—" began Theo.
"I have to go find him, he's—" she jumped off the bed and started for the door.
"Woah—what's going on Lucy?" the fluffy haired boy interrupted, gently grabbing her arm to stop her.
Lucy held her tongue for a moment, pondering if she should tell him. Then again, all hell was about to break loose in the castle, and Theodore would find out regardless, seeing as he was also a Death Eater.
"He's letting Death Eaters into the castle tonight," she said exasperatedly. "He's been tasked with killing Dumbledore,"
"Are you bloody serious?" cried out Theo, flabbergasted his brow deeply furrowed. "How—no—what—?"
"I don't have time to explain, they're probably already here, we have to go! " she insisted impatiently, shedding her Slytherin robe and hurrying to the door of the dormitory. He did not seem to question her any further, but instead followed quickly in pursuit. The two trotted past their friends who sat lounging in the common room, looks of confusion dawning upon their faces.
