The man thumbed through the files between his wary glances up at the three figures standing ominously in front of him in the filing room. He couldn't think about anything but running away and escaping the country if only to get away from from these lunatics.
Peter stood gently wiping Klaus' forehead with a pristine white handkerchief as Five stared at the man, tapping his foot impatiently. After hitting Klaus over the head with the overpriced snow globe that had formerly resided on the man's desk, the liquid was all over the two men and the floor. Peter gave Klaus a small smile as they met eyes and felt a nice warmth fill his heart.
"That's strange," said the CEO from behind the filing cabinet as he pulled out the desired file. Peter turned around with an exasperated expression.
"What?"
"Uh, the eye. It appears that it hasn't been purchased by a client yet."
"What? What do you mean?" Klaus questioned the man as he walked tauntingly around him, watching him squirm.
"Well," the man's voice broke off for a moment as Klaus stopped beside him looking at him intently. "Uh, our logs say that the eye with that serial number... this can't be right. It hasn't even been manufactured yet. Where did you get that eye?" Now that question had a long answer, but the man definitely wouldn't be getting it any time within the next seven days (which consequently would be all the time left before the end of the world as they knew it so...)
The weight of what the man was saying clicked in Peter's brain. This meant that whoever caused the apocalypse would be losing an eye in the next several days. That would make it a lot more difficult for them to track them down. Their only clue didn't even exist yet.
"That certainly puts a twist in things," muttered Peter under his breath.
Klaus didn't seem all that concerned and the look on his face sent a pang of annoyance through Peter. Peter felt a strong love for Klaus but sometimes Peter got tired just as everyone did at his antics. He tried to push through the negativity that threatened to form in his chest like a cloud. Being bitter wouldn't help their relationship any.
Peter pushed away his pointless, complicated thoughts as he heard Five let out a heavy sigh. "Well, this is not good." Peter would have laughed if the situation hadn't been so dire. He pulled the young preteen into a hug and comfortingly patted the boy's head almost as if a parent would. If it had been anyone else, Five would have pushed them away as if they disgusted him, but he couldn't help but feel protected in the arms of the person who had always cared for him.
As they came out of the front door of the building, Klaus was halfway through his rant about the dramatic scene from the office.
"I was pretty good though, right? 'Yeah! What about my consent, bitch?'" Peter couldn't help the twitch his lips gave at the adorable giggle that followed.
The feeling didn't last long. "Klaus it doesn't matter." Peter stared sadly down at Five as he quickly became angry. What had happened to the boy who used to be so full of light and hope? Peter was determined to help him to find some positivity (after saving the world of course, but some of it could be done as they went. Whose to say that perhaps a gunfight couldn't bring a smile onto his face?)
"What's the big deal with this eye anyway?" Peter wished he could hide away from the entire situation at the moment. He was on the verge of hysterical laughter at this point. If someone didn't intervene things could get ugly. Klaus always seemed to unintentionally push all the worst buttons.
"There is someone out there who is going to lose an eye in the next seven days. They're going to bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it." Five got slowly closer to Klaus' face as he went on. His cheeks were turning red and his glare could have killed.
Klaus stared back unbothered as the young boy turned back away. "Yeah, can I get that twenty bucks, like, now or what?" Five's face twisted in disbelief and anger. Peter felt disappointed at their immaturity.
"Your twenty bucks?"
"The apocalypse is coming, and all you can think about is getting high?" Peter's gaze sharpened.
"Five! That's enough." It seemed that his stern words weren't enough seeing as it didn't stop them from continuing the argument at all.
"Well, I'm quite hungry. Tummy's-a-rumbling," said Klaus waving his hands around with a nonchalant grin.
"You're useless." Five's words sent Peter back to one of the worst sections of his dispiriting life.
"Peter you can't do anything right! You're not worth my time if you won't even cook for me or do as I ask. You're just never going to be good enough." Peter's boyfriend of a year seemed to enjoy destroying his self-esteem and kicking him while he was down. Peter couldn't help but look at him and still see a semblance of the person he'd been when they'd first started dating. So he stayed. He stayed through all of the fights and through the times when Jared would trash the apartment. Peter couldn't help but be glad when he was mean because after a particularly bad fight sometimes Jared would take pity on him and for a moment it would almost be like old times.
Peter had gone through a lot of blind dates leading up to them getting together but it seemed they all felt the same way. He'd always left when they started beating down on him, but for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to leave Jared. Something about the way he looked at Peter like he mattered even if only a little.
Several years later after they'd broken up, Peter had learned that these feelings were common with people who had an absent parent growing up. While his situation was a little...unique- he'd resonated with this.
Faintly, Peter could hear Klaus and Five talking in the back of his mind. They discussed Five's wife of thirty years and Peter couldn't help but feel a pang in his heart at the heartbreak in his voice. But as he looked back up, finally out of his own memories and thoughts, Five was gone and only he and Klaus were left.
