The three siblings finally made their way home, but Eva was not able to shake the memory of the soldier from her mind while they were putting the wood away and Carla Jaeger was reprimanding Eren due to his laziness.
Eva realized that Dr. Jaeger was in fact packing his things, ready to depart, probably to visit some patients outside of the city, which the man confirmed himself.
"Probably for two or three days" he sentenced.
"Eren said he wants to join the Survey Corps" Mikasa announced, "Eva too."
Damn, Mikasa! Where I come from you can't snitch like this! Eva couldn't believe her sisters words.
"M-Mikasa, I told you not to tell them!" Eren protested.
"Eren! Eva! What are you two thinking!?" Carla screamed, grabbing Eren's shoulders forcefully. "Do you know how many people have died outside the walls?"
"I do!" he kept on fighting, looking at Eva for reassurance.
Just as the blonde girl was about to open her mouth, Doctor Jaeger spoke, his gravitas flooding the room.
"Eren, Eva... Why do you want to go outside?" he questioned.
"I want to know what it's like out there" Eren explained "I don't want to spend my life inside the walls, not knowing anything! Also... If no one carries on their work, all the casualties till now will have been in vain!"
"Eva?" Grisha now wanted to hear her reasons.
"All my life, I've dreamed about and fought for going to the surf-..." she bit her tongue, not wanting to speak about her past in such an emotional manner, as tears started to form in her eyes. "I've always wanted freedom. And I thought I'd find it here, but it turns out that there is more out there... it's just a continuation of my life's struggle."
And she had actually seen what was beyond. Let's say drunk Garrison officers did not take the best care of their 3DM gear, much to her advantage. And having seen it, she of course wanted more.
Doctor Grisha left, promising Eren and Eva that he would show them a secret he had kept in the basement upon his return.
"I am still against it," Carla sentenced "joining the Survey Corps? Don't be stupid."
"Huh? Stupid?!" he screamed. "I think people who're fine being cattle are way more stupid!"
Here comes another one of his fits huffed Eva, ready to run after him with Mikasa, as per Carla's instructions.
As predicted, Eren was running directly into trouble. For the right reasons, since he was charging against the neighbourhood bullies that were picking on Armin.
Nothing new here, Eva thought, as soon as they see me and Mikasa they will run for dear life.
Exactly as predicted.
"Ha! They ran away when they saw me!" Eren spoke, rather cocky.
"No, they ran when they saw Eva and Mikasa" Armin corrected him, as he started to explain to his friends how exactly the fight broke out. "So I said that humanity should go out into the world someday. And they hit me and called me a heretic."
"Damn it" cursed Eren, "why does everyone act like you're crazy if you want to go outside?"
"Because staying within the walls has brought peace for a hundred years" Armin explained. "They're afraid that if many of us venture out, we'll risk letting them in. So the royal government declared any interest in the outside world taboo."
