she didn't tell me that.

The dress was more than beautiful, it was the best dress I have ever seen, let alone, put on.

It didn't need to be altered, and it fell in all the right places. I absolutely loved it. Although, I'm not usually the type to get dressed up and go to a party-- especially with Kooks.

Rafe, Topper, and I drove in one car, leaving my dad and Topper's mom alone. I didn't even want to begin to wonder what the hell they have done, or what they're going to do.

--
When we arrived at midsummers, Rafe and Topper go one way, I go the opposite. I didn't want to be be socializing with them. Especially, around Kiara.

A smile spreads across my face when I notice Heyward's truck pull up to midsummers. They always did the food for these events. Last year, I helped quite a bit with nothing in return. I wasn't looking for money or any type of payment, but I barely even got a thank you.

"Would've killed your mama." I hear Heyward say as I walk up to the boys.

I must've interrupted.

"One of these rich, white folks messes up, they'll still go to college and meet another rich person." Heyward continues. "Then they'll make more kids, who'll also get third and fourth chances."

"I know. I gotta do better. I get it." Pope says.

I felt bad for the boy. He was constantly worried about his merit scholarship, but he did well in school he doesn't do drugs, drink, he's not in a gang, he's the perfect kid with some bad luck.

"You guys want any help?" I smile, my eyes landing on Pope's, which were tracing my dress.

"No." Heyward says. "Wouldn't want that absolutely beautiful dress being messed up."

"Right." I nod, feeling ashamed. I knew this was going to be my new life, but I wasn't ready. This isn't how I wanted to spend my summer. We still have time, I suppose. But it will probably be taken over by John B's incredulous delusions.

"You look incredible, Leia." Pope smiles, handing off a box to his father.

"Thank you." I take that has my note to leave, and go try and find someone who is somewhat bearable. Unfortunately, I run into Kiara.

I have yet to apologize to the girl, but I honestly wasn't in the mood tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

"You see Pope?" She questions-- as if nothing happened.

"Yeah, he's putting out the food or whatever."

"What are you even doing here?" She asks.

I wasn't expecting her to ask that in this moment.

"The Thorntons invited me and my dad." I state.

"Why?" Kie asks, beginning to pry into my life. "They're assholes."

"You're wrong, actually." I comment. "You think you know everything, Kie. But you don't. you don't know anything about my life, and you honestly, you don't even make an effort to be part of my life or try to understand it. You're too quick to blame, and jump to conclusions when you know absolutely nothing about the story." I ramble.

The words flow out of my mouth, and again, I don't get the chance to think about what I'm saying.

"Leia, I-"

"If you're trying to somehow 'justify' your actions, I would stop. Everyone knows that you gave up on the Kook Academy quickly, and you are a shitty friend."

I should stop talking.

"You came crawling back to us and I just can't handle it. Please, leave me alone." I release a breath of air after my quick sentences poured out of my mouth.
