"That's as much as she told me"

Shoko sheepishly admitted her hand playing with the edge of her lab coat.

Itadori scratched at his head struggling to pull together the fragments of what he had been told.

"So this chick knew Nanami before she even knew they met, and then he falls for her and then they fight and they make up, I don't understand, what made her so special in the first place"

"Cause that's how love works stupid"

Nobara slapped the back of his head, Megumi cut through Itadoris whine.

"Maybe it's because they were already part of each other's lives in the past without knowing it, everything they've done lead to them meeting again"

"I think you're reading too much into it-"

Itadori mumbled but Gojo was clapping gleefully.

"What a cute way to say that"

"But...what even happened to her? How does it explain how scary Mr.Nanami is"

Shoko and Gojo exchanged a look. Nobaras face fell.

"Please don't tell me she's dead"

"Dead? No- not dead just"

Gojo waved his hands around.

"Well they really did last a year, it was, cut short you could say, but that's not something im allowed to talk about, Nanami wouldn't be the only person to skin me alive if he found out I told you kids"

The collective whine was expected, having passed the past few hours with the story it felt like they themselves had been good friends with Y/N.

They were itching to know how it all ended.

At least it was Nobaras intense curiosity that fueled the boys excitement.

"You can't just leave us at that"

Shoko made a motion over her lips, pretending to lock it.

"The elders would kill me"

"We're nearly late for the fireworks, we should probably head out"

Gojo popped out cutting off their nagging.

Also ending the discussion.

_____

They had all clambered out in puffy jackets and warm coats. Nobara was still grumbling about wanting to know how the story ended, but Shoko had been firm, wishing them all a good night before heading back to her lab.

Even Gojo kept his mouth shut for once.

So Nobara decided to take matters into her own hands.

She stole his phone.

"Gojo it's nearly midnight what in-"

"Nanami, it's me"

Silence

"I'm sorry who is this? Why do you have Gojos phone"

The brunette peeked over at the other three. She had snuck away saying she needed to pee. They were currently jumping around with hand held sparklers.

"It's me, Nobara, Gojos student who called you earlier this evening"

"What seems to be the issue, is everything alright?"

She shifted trying to get comfortable.

"I just wanted to ask something"

"Go ahead"

She hesitated, realizing slowly how dumb of an idea it was. But the intent to know was killing her.

"Why can't you join us for New Years? Gojo was pretty bummed"

"I had serious matters to attend to, I'm sorry for disappointing you all tonight, but was that all you wanted to ask?"

She gripped the phone tighter, hunching her shoulders.

"Does it have to do with, L/N"

Silence again, she pulled the phone away from her ear thinking he had hung up, but he was still on the line.

"I'm sorry- it's none of my business but I just, I just wanted to know, did she die, what happened I'm so sorry if it came out so impersonal but I-"

A gentle laugh cut her off, startling her so much she blushed realizing she had raised her voice without meaning to.

"I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you. I'm just pleased"

"Pleased about what?"

This was turning into one hell of a long bathroom break

"That you haven't met her and yet you're so interested in her"

"She sounds like a wonderful women Mr.Nanami"

"You can meet her if you'd like"

"What"

She straightened

"When? Where?"

"I have no idea"

A smile was growing across Nobaras face, a word game, she was good at those.

"I can't wait to meet her Mr.Nanami, have a wonderful new year"

"Good night, Ms.Nobara"

_____

Nanami was outside when he slid the phone into his pocket, it was cold but he was dutifully paying his respects at the shrine.

It was only fair.

He stuck his hands into his pockets tilting his head up to the stars.

That Nobara girl caught ahead of what he had said.

Telling anyone the end of their story together felt like closing the chapter of something so important.

Their story wasn't over yet, so of course he couldn't tell her. She could hear it from Y/N herself.

He played with the ring on his finger, letting himself sit down on the bench with a sigh.

Every year he came out here hoping to see maybe she'd show up as she promised.

But even Nanami couldn't suppress the feelings of loneliness and detachment, having what he once loved gone from him for so long.

Gojo often made fun of him for still sticking around and acting like an already married man, but in reality that's what Nanami felt like. He was hers, both mind and soul fully devoted.

He slipped out the letter from his pocket, thumbing the writing gently, eyes running over the pages. He had read it a million times.

Nanami knew the words by heart.

The last letter to him from her.
