CHAPTER 5
EMBARRASSEDY/N was off, leaving Nanami with the baby.
"Wait! Y/N! Stop!"
He looked down at the child who looked right back up at him almost in judgment.
"Well she ran off, what was I supposed to do?"
He found himself muttering, pushing the stroller he took on a brisk stride and catching up to the H/C.
She was crouched beside a senior citizen who was on her hands and knees.
"What seems to be the problem"
Y/N looked up from her murmur of reassurances her face pinched.
"Robbery, in broad daylight"
"Those hoodlums, they stole my bag"
The old lady said with a wobbly voice. Y/N helped her up retrieving her cane with a kind look.
"We can report this to the station, hopefully, they'll find those kids, I wish I could help"
"It's alright dearie, you've done more than enough"
The senior patted her hand gently glancing up at Nanami with the stroller in his hands.
"You're a lucky man, with such a kind, quick thinking lady by your side"
"I'm sorry we're not—"
Y/N began
"I agree"
He cut in.
Y/N's face brightened and she bit her lip letting out a nervous laugh, the old lady looked between the two confused.
Nanami realizing what he had just said, cleared his throat trying to play it off.
"We should head over to the station then"
—-
After they had filed their witness reports the old lady thanked them a hundred times.
"Are you sure you two are married?"
Nanami looked up at the elderly woman who was gazing at Y/N. The H/C had just finished up with her paperwork and was now playing with Sandra.
"No, we aren't"
"And the baby? If you're okay with me asking"
Nanami shook his head, confused as to why she was so interested.
"Not ours, ms.L/N is babysitting"
"and yet you address her by her last name"
The old lady chuckled softly to herself, almost as if laughing at an inside joke.
"Tell me, young man, do you have feelings for her"
The question was so sudden he dropped his pen, cursing softly and then immediately apologizing he picked it up brows furrowed.
"No, of course not, she's my coworker"
"Ah, I see"
She nodded, Nanami paused.
"How did you know we weren't married?"
"I've never seen a married couple act so awkward around each other before"
—-
When they had left, the old lady's words still rang in the back of his mind.
Y/N had taken back the stroller, humming softly.
"What an eventful morning, I'm sorry I dragged you into this Nanami"
"I'm glad I could help"
There it was again, the breathless feeling that came with every sentence when he talked to her. How embarrassing.
"Hey L/N-"
She looked up and he stopped walking staring dumbfounded at the H/C.
"yes Nanami? are you alright? Is there something on my face"
She asked nervously patting her head.
"No! you're perfect, just fine, what I meant to say was..."
He swallowed, what was wrong with him.
"Do you want to see that film, for the production we're working for? Tomorrow night"
It wasn't like he was asking her out, the people they were working for had a film coming out as well. The boss had suggested sneakily to watch it, (even if it was terrible) to get on their client's good side.
Y/N ran her teeth along her bottom lip.
"Oh, no sorry, I promised Satoru dinner"
Nanami must have looked crestfallen because she shook her head violently.
"I can always—"
"No, L/N please, don't stress yourself out don't worry about work on your day off"
She opened her mouth then closed it,
"I- uh- I should go, I'll catch you later"
Y/N pushed off with a wave, and Nanami had to stop himself from kicking the wall.
He had to go and make her uncomfortable, ruining a perfectly content evening just because some old women had given him false hope.
He stopped with a frown.
False hope about what.
He pinched the bridge of his nose crossing the intersection agitated. This was unlike him.
What was this feeling, he didn't quite understand it, nor was he a fan of. He respected Y/N's wishes, but what if she had said yes what would have that meant.
He had arrived at his apartment, letting himself in as he threw his groceries on the kitchen counter.
Nanami loosened his collar finally letting himself sit down and think.
What had Y/N done to make him feel this way? And he wasn't upset at her at all, rather at himself, and he couldn't understand why.
—-
Y/N's face was still burning as she handed back the baby to her cooing mother.
Was she imagining it or did Nananmi almost ask her out. The H/C shook her head, no, he wouldn't be interested in something as frivolous as that, probably for work.
But the way he had called her perfect, the way he had praised her indirectly.
When she had arrived home she flopped right onto her bed, face smushed into her pillow.
But Gojo. She sat up with a sigh, glancing up at the time before rolling over and kicking off her shoes.
She couldn't cancel plans with him, Y/N could admit she still had a crush on her sister's ex-boyfriend. And it wasn't like he was a bad person, just too flighty nothing like the sturdy, dependable Nanami.
"Ah what am I thinking! I work with him!"
She slapped her hands over the sides of her face shaking her head before flopping on to her back again.
But Nanami and Gojo had seemed to know each other, she'd have to ask Satoru about that some other time
