"Hello, Nanami!~"

"What is it Gojo, I'm in the middle of work"

Nanami was standing outside, one hand in his pocket as he watched pedestrians run back and forth. Midday foot traffic was the worst.

His phone was pressed his ear .

"Can't even say hello to your best friend!"

"I'll tell him when I see him"

A hurt whine came from the receiving end and he exhaled.

"What do you need Gojo"

"Oh yeah, we got a new charge today"

The blonde raised an eyebrow. He didn't understand how any of that concerned him, he had dropped out of sorcery school years ago.

"Okay"

"You know what a charge is"

Of course, he did, it was someone who was under the protection of the shaman society. Charges were usually innocent targets of upper-class demons or simply important people who weren't strong enough to protect themselves.

"Why does that concern me?"

"Well she's working where you work"

Nanami blinked. He spun around at the glass door, to the building where he had left her.

They wouldn't

"And what is her name"

"Y/N L/N, geez connect the dots"

He blanched.

"Satoru Gojo you did not just put the responsibility of a charge in my hands"

"Why not"

Nanami gritted his teeth, closing his eyes.

"None of this sorcery stuff concerns me, it's not my job"

"Cmon Nanami, besides she can't see Cursed spirits so most of them will leave her alone"

Nanami didn't answer, so Gojo continued.

"She's the daughter of one of the sorcerer bloodlines overseas, she doesn't know that, of course, according to her she's just here on a work trip"

"She said she was here from the firm down the street"

Gojo sighed, almost as if it was Nanami who was the child.

"Yes yes, we may have played with her memory just a bit"

"I'm not doing this"

Nanami hung up the phone with a grumble. What did he care?

—-

"Mr.Nanami, hold on"

The blonde looked up, he was packing his briefcase and he straightened.

Y/N smiled, pulling her jacket tight against her body.

"Walk to the bus stop together?"

He didn't answer, she took that as a sign to trail behind him as he made his way out the door.

It was raining again, they stood side by side and they shared a look. Without a word, the blonde opened his umbrella.

He wanted nothing to do with her, but he wasn't a monster.

A grateful smile made its way across her face as they both stepped out. It was getting late and they had been the last ones out of the office. The rain a gentle hush around them as they walked to the bus shelter.

"What's it like working here for a long time, Mr.Nanami"

"It's fine"

She clutched her bag tighter to her chest, tilting her chin to gaze at the droplets of water that were collecting on the edges of the umbrella. There was yet another unreadable expression on her face.

"You never answered my question"

"Pardon?"

She didn't waver and he cleared his throat.

"New Year, what's one wish you have?"

"There isn't anything I want in this world"

He responded she laughed, taking him by surprise.

"You liar"

"I'm sorry?"

She faced him

"You're a big fat liar, Nanami Kento"

They stopped at the shelter and he stared at her wide-eyed in disbelief.

She knelt plucking a stray dandelion that was growing out of the cracks of the wet concrete and twirled the stem one before sticking it in her hair.

"I'm not a materialistic man, Ms.L/N"

"And I'm not a fool for a women, Mr.Nanami"

She shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

"What do you want, Nanami"

His eyebrows drew together and he looked away, clearly upset by the conversation.

"Why are you so pressed to know"

"Because I'm just trying to find something, anything in common"

A hush fell between them. The rain now coming down in sheets. The chill made the two both shiver, Y/N even more since she was wearing a skirt.

Nanami's face softened and he opened his mouth before closing it then trying again.

"I see"

Her answer made absolutely no sense.

"Are you cold Nanami?"

He looked back up again warily, she was smiling and rubbing her arms.

"Cause I sure am"

—-

Nanami had somehow ended up coatless.

He had watched it get off the bus with Y/N L/N. It was the gentlemanly thing to do after all. Wearing his solid blue tie and his dress shirt he felt the chill of the evening, getting off in front of the convenience store.

His hand lingered on a pack of dry ramen, hesitant as he eyed the bright light of a small corner grocery store across the street. Shaking his head he picked up the dry food and took it to the cashier. It was too late to make anything healthy tonight. There was the same old woman who checked it with a soft knowing smile, a nod.

"Right on time, as always"

He looked up from his wallet.

"Pardon?"

She smiled. She was probably someone's mother, widowed children out of the nest. The ring around her finger attested to at least a part of that. The old lady smiled.

"Always on time, I look forward to seeing you, you remind me of my son"

He gave a tight smile as he accepted the baggie, after paying for the purchase, he left as quietly as he had come in.
