again the sun will rise for another day

Nanami never felt more vulnerable than at that moment. He squeezed his eyes shut before opening them again as he touched the ring on his finger.

Maybe morning would never come.

Maybe Y/N was a star he was never meant to reach.

Finally, after what felt like forever he wiped his face, checking the time with a heavy sigh, nearly 30 seconds till the New Year.

The blonde stood up, it was time to go home.

There was always next year and the year after that. He could wait.

He wasn't the only one visiting the shrine, there were others as well, paying their respects.

For both the dead left behind and a prayer for the future ahead.

As he was about to push past the gates, he bumped into a figure bundled up in a large coat. Nanami opened his mouth to apologize but his eyes caught on the star-shaped pin on their lapel.

His heart fluttered in his throat as he caught them by the arm. At the same time, a pair of hands fitted into the crook of his elbow stopping Nanami just in time so he could look at the newcomer straight in their E/C eyes.

"you haven't aged a day, Ken"

He couldn't believe it. The band on her right finger winked gently, it rested against his arm matching the one on his own.

"You're back-"

She smiled at that, she smiled so wide so merrily.

He had been afraid that their time apart would have left them as strangers. But that fear dissolved faster than it had accumulated over the years.

His heart lifted and the familiar warmth flooded back into his face, he followed her gaze to the tie that peeked out from beneath his winter jacket.

It was an ugly leopard print.

She let him go stepping back so they could admire each other. Her eyes brighter, face cheerful and bitten through with frost. She held her fingers to her mouth to blow on them.

Nanami could see him taking those hands of hers again, they would be rougher, more worn through with training.

They had so much catching up to do.

Y/N took off her hat, an icy puff leaving her lips as she spoke. Her ring hand was outstretched and he took it. He replied, her laugh matched his gentle words harmoniously.

No longer was the night as dark, his vision had cleared, and the moon seemed brighter as she cast a look over her shoulder.

Nanami realized, She was making sure he was still holding on.

He was, and he didn't intend to let go any time soon.

And in the end, against the backdrop of a million stars, in their own little universe.

All he could see was her,

and all she could see was him.
