Evangeline POV:
" You are definitely not coming with me to the recruiting station," Steve huffed as I followed him through the crowded street.
"Yes I am, and you won't stop me this time. Cut me some slack, I haven't tried to stop you no matter how many failed attempts," I snapped, "I'm eighteen which makes me eligible."
"Bucky doesn't know you're here does he?" he stared not looking at me.
I didn't have to answer. We both knew the answer to that. I grabbed his arm stopping him.
"I'm going with or without you, Rogers," I huffed.
He stared at me. I stared right back not backing down. Over the years our height difference had failed to make an appearance. He is still the same height as when we originally met and I seemed to have stopped growing entirely. His eyes were brighter now and he tend to smile less. He hasn't had a hair cut which is a shame and his chicken-like arms were protruding.
"Damn, you're lucky you're such a dame," he groaned, "Come on."
I smacked his arm with a sharp look to which he laughed at. We went into the recruiting station with our heads held high.
"Name," the lady at the front desk said in a board monotone voice.
"Evangeline Rose Barnes," I answered.
She handed me a packet of forms to fill out. I took them and began to fill them out. Steve soon joined me filling out his own forms. I looked up when he bumped my foot suddenly.
"Don't look now just about all eyes are on you," he whispered in my ear.
I glanced up to see multiple men staring in our direction. Even a few ladies were looking at us. Damn nearly everyone was.
"I believe some of them are looking at you," I murmured back with a chuckle
He glanced up and caught the eye of on of the girls. He smiled and offered a quick wave to which she had giggled at. The two of us laughed softly at her reaction. After a little while, I was called back.
"Hello Ms. Barnes," the nurse said as she walked in.
"Hello," I replied with a smile.
"Are you looking into nursing or a position in the Academy?" she asked checking my blood pressure and heart rate.
"Academy positions are open to women?" I questioned with a frown.
"They are now We need everyone to help win this war. Plus we women tend to have an eye in this sort of stuff that men just don't have," she answered with a playful smirk.
I laughed nodding
"Well then I would like to try my luck in the Academy if can," I replied .
"Good, we need more women on the front lines to keep these soldiers in check," she said with a sly smile before winking, "I'll be right back."
I chuckled as she left. I hadn't even considered the Academy a possibility up until now. In the last war, it was only open to men. I guess they finally realised women can do this stuff too. After my exam, the nurse returned with a file in her hand. I smiled at the sight of the mark of approval. One of the female officers then helped me with my application to the Academy.
"So how did it go?" Steve asked as soon as we left the station.
"I'm all set. They sent in my application for the Academy and I'll find out if I got in or not in two weeks," I answered.
"The Academy!?" he snapped stopping in the middle of the streets, "You can't go into the Academy!"
"Why not?" I snapped crossing my arms over my chested angrily, "And don't say it's because I'm a woman."
"First of all you're hardly a woman," he scoffed, "And secondly, Bucky's never going to let you do it. Hell, I'm not gonna let you!"
"Excuse me?! You are not the boss of me Rogers! And neither is James. Did Scrawny Steve not get his approval. Boo-bloody-Hoo. And I thought you would've supported me in this," I cried furiously before storming off.
He didn't even bother chasing me. I didn't want to go home yet and face Bucky either. He's just act the same way as Steve did. I wis they'd stop treating me like a kid.
I found myself back at the dancing hall where James had taken us when we were kids. It had become out spot for some time now. I walked inside briskly and sat at the bar.
"Hey why the sad look Dollface?" a voice called over.
I glanced over to see a guy who was probably a few years older than me. The fells plopped himself at my side.
"It's nothing, just having some troubles with a friend," I sighed putting my head in my hands.
"You look like you could use one of these more than me," he chuckled pushing his cup towards me.
I looked at it unsurely at first. I mean he could have drugged it for all I know. But then, I found myself not giving a single bother about what could happen. I grabbed it and drained the contents in seconds. The sweet liquid burned my throat but I hardly felt the pain as it had subsided seconds after.
"Ain't that something else," he said with a look of awe on his face.
I giggled already starting to feel the effects of the alcohol.
"That's nothing, I can do better," I replied, "Wanna see?"
He laughed and got the bartender to give him another round. This will be fun.
