you felt a strange familiarity with him, but couldn't quite place it. even his robe seemed oddly familiar, especially his soft, majestic purple eyes.
the trance was broken when you sensed an attack coming from behind. you quickly pulled the man to the side, and both of you rolled away from the strike.
standing up, you flipped through your grimoire and cast a spell.
"celestial magic: cancer's shield of faith."
a protective barrier enveloped both of you. you cast another spell,
"celestial magic: virgo's maiden,"
pressing your hands against the man's chest. pink smoke surrounded him, and his scratches and bleeding ceased. his injuries and pain disappeared, and he looked impressed.
he watched you intently as you removed your hands, but he struggled to get up. "wait here for a second; i'll handle this," you whispered with a reassuring smile.
he was flustered, though he didn't fully understand why.
you stepped out of the barrier, taking a deep breath and feeling the woods and nearby waterfalls around you. a good flow of mana surged through your body. with a small smile, you moved swiftly toward the source of the threat.
you glimpsed a tall man with black hair standing behind a tree. sensing another presence on top of a nearby large tree and yet another near the waterfalls, you acted with lightning speed. you attacked the man hiding behind the tree effortlessly, his lack of movement betraying his inability to react. he was knocked down before he even realized he had an opponent.
you turned around just as a blade swung towards your head. catching it with your hand, covered in water that absorbs magic, you watched as the silver-haired man's fine diamond blade melted away in your grip. the eerie sight of the blade dissolving in the water was unsettling.
secretly opening your other hand from behind your back, the blade reappeared with much greater power. it flew around you, speeding towards the man, nearly grazing his head.
you chuckled, noting the man you had healed earlier trying to move away from your spell. you dispelled the magic and refocused on your opponent.
you weren't sure who was good or bad, but these attackers were targeting the charismatic man you had helped. something inside you told you that the silver-haired man was the enemy, and that voice had never been wrong.
the silver-haired man began attacking you with his blades, but you dodged them with ease. standing still, you closed your eyes as everything seemed to slow down.
"celestial magic: balm of the night court."
soft purple clouds enveloped your body, causing the silver-haired man to watch in confusion.
with a flawless motion, you formed an O shape with your arms and moved with precision. seeing the enemy dazed and trapped by your magic, you shifted your right foot back slightly before launching your attack. the soft clouds struck him directly in the head, causing him to black out.
you sighed, closing your eyes and taking a deep breath, sensing two bodies near the waterfalls. you summoned your broom, imbuing it with magic, and flew swiftly towards the river.
upon arrival, you found the charismatic man panting heavily, on the verge of casting a powerful spell. you ran up to him and grabbed his wrist, causing him to stop immediately.
he turned to meet your blue eyes, which stared at his purple ones with a soft, pleading look. as a surge of magic approached, you shielded yourself in front of him, taking the brunt of the attack.
having expended much of your mana, your body felt ready to collapse. just before hitting the ground, you were caught by two arms wrapping around your waist, preventing you from falling.
he gently set you down as roots began to emerge from under his feet, quickly reaching the river. you felt your mana being drained. as he prepared to cast his spell, you interrupted with a soft, almost inaudible voice, "stop."
he looked at you, his eyes softening with confusion.
what? he thought.
"it's okay..." he assures, and with that, he resumed casting his spell.
"world tree magic: great tree misteltein."
you felt yourself being drained as a massive tree began to form. you closed your eyes, feeling intensely sick.
you didn't even register the arm still holding you. the ground stopped shaking as you struggled to open your eyes.
when you finally did, you saw the charismatic, fancy-masked man smiling gently at you. his reassuring smile made you feel that everything was going to be okay. exhausted and stumbling, you tried to stand. looking around, you realized you were standing on a large branch of an enormous tree.
the view and the wind were peaceful. despite not understanding how or why, you felt a sense of protection.
"you have my thanks for saving me earlier," the man said, his warm smile still visible. you nodded in response and began to turn around when the silver-haired man appeared mere inches from your face.
you watched as a tree branch began to crush him. looking back at the masked man, you saw his smile still in place, which made you smile back despite the situation.
you turned and delivered a powerful punch to the silver-haired man's face, causing him to black out. facing the masked man again, you saw someone on his back, ready to attack.
your breathing hitched as the masked man's bright smile remained unchanged. your heart began to race, and you suddenly felt a surge of worry as your grimoire flipped to a blank page that started filling with a new spell.
everything stopped moving—the wind, the water, the leaves. the man floated in mid-air without any visible use of magic, while the masked man continued to smile warmly. you were jolted out of your trance by a yawn. a little fairy with a half-moon shape on her forehead emerged from your grimoire, her delicate wings shimmering in the dim light. she gave you a warm smile before conjuring a purplish dragon. the dragon had iridescent scales that shimmered in hues of violet and midnight blue, with tiny, sparkling stars scattered across its body. its eyes glowed with an enigmatic light, and a pair of elegant, bat-like wings stretched out gracefully from its back.
as the dragon materialized, the half-moon mark on the fairy's forehead glowed brightly. before you could fully comprehend what was happening, the man who had been about to attack the masked figure was knocked to the ground, barely conscious.
the masked man chuckled. "may i know your name?" he asked, still smiling.
"Y/N... Y/N diana," you replied. he stared at you for a moment before shaking himself out of his thoughts.
"it is nice to meet you, miss diana. i am william vangeance." he extended a hand for a handshake, which you accepted. "since I owe you for saving my life, would you like to join my squad and become a magic knight?"
you blinked, "pardon?"
he chuckled, "i'm a captain of a magic knight squad. forgive me for not fully informing you." you cleared your throat and looked away, thinking, what is a magic knight?
"a captain?"
