"Where's Anya?" asked Wylan, a nervous wobble to his steps as he and Colm prepared to leave. "She said she'd see me off."

Kaz didn't answer, busy tying his tie in front of the mirror, eyes downcast.

"Kaz?" Jesper added on, brows drawn in confusion. "Do you know where she is? I haven't seen her since last night."

"Is she not back from seeing Genya?" Nina added on, stepping away from Matthias.

It was Inej who replied. "I brought her back in," she said, watching Kaz carefully. "And then I watched her leave not too long after. She spoke to you, Kaz, didn't she? Did she say where she was going?"

"We wanted to say goodbye," Nina said, looking up at Matthias as she spoke.

"You won't need to say goodbye," Kaz told them, voice rasping harshly, even for him. "She's headed for the Ravkan delegation. You'll go home together, Nina."

The room fell into stunned silence, the only noise being Jesper's fingers tapping against the metal of his guns. Finally, Wylan dared speak up. "No, that doesn't make sense. She wouldn't just leave like that."

"No," Inej agreed. "What did she say to you, Kaz?"

"Or rather, what did you say to her?" Matthias added on quietly, hand gripping Nina's shoulder as she began to frown.

"She made her intentions clear enough," Kaz grunted, daring to meet Jesper's inquisitive stare. "Ravka's her home; we shouldn't have expected anything else."

"But - but she said she wanted to stay here with -" Wylan started, only stopping when Jesper placed a hand on his arm. This wasn't the time, nor the place.

"She's going to go through with it then?" Nina asked, glancing between Kaz and Inej. The girls had thought they were only ones to have been told about her plan to trap the Darkling. "She has the ring and everything?"

Kaz's mind reeled, instantly flashing back to the sway of the mighty emerald clasped around her neck. He thought back to the knife she'd taken away from him - rightfully so, he supposed - it was hers after all. Still, he couldn't shake the dull ache in his gut at the thought of who she was undoubtedly giving it to. "Yes - the knife, the ring." Whatever shred of hope he had allowed to flicker in the depths of his soul.
