Ulla had been watching the mélange of Grisha and otkazat'sya working to revive the Shu boy for some time now. The dagger sheathed in her wraps burned against her skin. It was only when the boy jumped forth with life, and the blade began to heat up to the point that she wanted to hurl it across the canal that she emerged from the depths of the water with her trademark glow of green. As her head broke the surface, her skin began to fade back to the warm brown it became when she touched the ground, the slits in her neck closing to allow air into her lungs. "Genya Safin," she hummed, spotting the familiar face.
The group shifted, weapons raised, jaws slack. "Wait!" Genya cried out, hands moving to push the woman in the dark blue Kefta back. "Wait - it's ok! She's ok!"
Ulla watched on in amusement, lazily wading towards the edge of the bottle boat. "I've had warmer welcomes."
"You're- you're Sankta Ursula!" the small girl with long dark hair gasped. Ulla gave her a small smile, eyes flashing happily as she considered the group. They were on odd mix, but she didn't expect anything less from her wayward sister.
"What are you doing here?" Genya asked frantically. "You're supposed to be - has it been done?"
"Has what been done?" the man in the teal blue frock asked. "What business do you have with a saint, Genya?"
Ulla rolled her neck and sighed. "I am Ulla Morozova, and we do not have much time, so listen carefully," she began, her voice as smooth as the rolling waves of the ocean, but she was soon interrupted - she hadn't expected any less.
"Morozova?" the boy with the cane asked in a careful tone. "You're related to Anya?"
"Anastasia?" the ruddy haired man asked sharply. "You know where she is?"
At that, one of the younger Grisha turned to look at one of her companions. "You said she was with the Ravkan delegation, Kaz!"
Kaz's grip tightened on his cane. "That's what she told me."
"No," Genya shook her head. "She's supposed to be with Ulla. That was the plan."
Ulla gave them a dry stare. "If you would let me speak," she drawled, and the man in the teal coat clamped his jaw shut to look at her expectantly. "My sister is not with me. Our brother has broken her mind and her spirit; she's in his grasp."
"The Darkling?" the Squaller gasped sharply. "I thought she said she had a plan!"
"We did," Ulla said, her tone growing more urgent. "We were too late. They came to me in the early hours of the morning. He could see me and I could see him. He could move, and speak and touch - just as any living man."
"She was going to trap him," the Suli girl spoke up. "She was going to trap his spirit in a cursed object."
"But we cursed the object this morning," Genya said, looking down at Ulla in confusion. "All she needed was the dagger and we would have been done with it. Where is the dagger?"
The boy with the cane - Kaz, he remembered - turned his head away from the sunlight. "She took it this morning."
Ulla sighed and tugged the burning knife out of her wrap, slamming it down into the wooden edge of the boat. The surface blackened from the heat. "She doesn't know I took it. I couldn't leave it with her - not with him around."
