Toni basked in the glory of the moment, staring at the vast space before her with a satisfied smile on her lips. She cuddled further into Nasir's body, loving the way his hand drew circles over her tummy. It made her feel warm all over.
Nasir had brought her to his farmland, a very large farm which he said was one of the numerous ones he still had around. She always knew her husband was rich, but not how rich. The first thing Nasir did was to show her the horses, he had a lot of them, and she would have loved to ride them, but Nasir refused. He had promise to let her ride horses as much as she wants after she has put to bed. After that, they had walked around and even got to see some of his cattles that were being herded by some of his workmen.
Now they were both seated on a mat, relaxing after eating to their fill, just living in the moment.
"Nasir," she called.
"Hmm," he answered. She felt the words vibrate through his chest which sent shivers through her spine.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead, I'll answer it."
"Why did you pretend to be poor back at Lagos?" She asked the one thing she has always wanted to know.
Nasir chuckled, his chest rumbling beneath her. "I had being expecting you to ask a long time ago."
"If I had asked a long time ago would you have answered me?"
"Probably not," Nasir said truthfully.
"Good, now answer me. You promised," she said, turning around in his arms to face him.
"It was some decision I made in the spur of a moment, I wanted to get away from this life. Wanted to experience life in some other way," he started speaking, picking his word one by one. "I grew up knowing I had responsibilities, I knew I had to take over the company at some time, knew I'd have to marry Azeezat at some point also."
"You considered marrying a responsibility?" Toni asked.
"It was a duty to me. My father chose my bride, I had to grow up and marry her. It was a responsibility I had to carry out." He shrugged his shoulders.
"But you grew to love her, didn't you?" Toni asked, which was stupid since she already knew what the answer was. Why the hell was she digging for her own pain?
Nasir laughed. "Yeah, I did grow to love her, even got used to the thought of marrying her."
"Ohh." Toni bit on her bottom lip, then took her mind off his love for Azeezat. She was okay with the way things were now, if he could grow to love Azeezat, then he'd definitely grow to love her also, someday. "But none of these explains your reason for leaving home and pretending to be poor in another city."
"I wanted to work for my own money, I wanted to see if I could make it on my own without the privileges I had," he said in a tight voice. "I started going to my father's company even before I graduated from the University. And I've heard a lot of the employees complain about me. They say I wasn't fit to be working at the company, that I'm only lucky to because my father owns it."
"So you wanted to prove to them that you could make your own money?" Toni asked in a very amused tone.
Toni could never bring herself to understand male egos. She had grown up with rich parents and never for once felt the need to prove herself, although she has made enough money now herself. She was also aware that most of these things happened because of the privileges she had. If her mum hadn't being rich, then she wouldn't have being able to fly her out to Canada when that incident happened six years ago. And she definitely wouldn't have built the career she had now, nor the money she made. Why can't humans just appreciate certain privileges, instead of proving stupid things?
