"Yeah, and that's your baby. Seems to be growing just fine," Dr. Farhan said, pointing to the tiny human on the screen as he rubbed the gel over her lower belly.
Toni felt her heart squeeze in her chest as she stared at the life growing within her, she had never done an ultrasound before, simply because she couldn't bear the thought of doing it all alone. But with Nasir beside her, it felt like the most natural thing to do. She turned to look at Nasir, only to find him fixated on the screen, his eyes held so much emotions she couldn't explain as he reached out for her hand and held it tight.
"That is our baby," Nasir said in a mesmerized tone, looking as though he was in a trance. He held onto her hand, giving it a squeeze. "She's a miracle!"
"Yeah, she is!" Toni smiled, feeling love swell through her as she stared at the man she loved, her husband, sitting right beside her.
Dr. Farhan cleared his throat. "I believe this is the first ultrasound you'll be having, Mrs Abubakar."
"Yes, Doctor," she answered.
"Then how come you both know you're having a girl. Have you become a doctor that you can decipher the gender of your baby from the sonogram?" Dr. Farhan asked, spotting a smile.
Toni smiled. She had suspected she was having a girl, she didn't know why exactly, but her gut instincts had told her it was a girl. Turns out it was the truth.
"Well Omotoni said she had a feeling it was a girl, is it?" Nasir asked.
"Looks like you're some kind of psychic, Mrs Abubakar." Dr. Farhan laughed. "It is in the fact a girl. You both are having a daughter."
She turned to Nasir, giving him a look of pure joy. He also had a smile on his face as he thanked the Doctor and they both prepared to leave the hospital. After a few more check-up, they both left the hospital. Nasir's hand didn't leave her stomach all through the ride, he kept on rubbing circles on her belly, which tickled her through the cotton blue gown she was wearing.
Her smile didn't leave her face also. Another feeling that didn't leave her was that feeling of constant fear that what ever was happening between her and Nasir right now was too good to be true, and that she would soon be awakened to reality by his change sooner than later. And it would definitely hurt her, maybe even more than before. She loved this man, and she wanted him to love her as much as she loved him, was that too much to wish for?
But she wouldn't rush it, she could live with this. If he could continue being this way with her, then it was enough. She wouldn't think of the fact that he loved another woman, she was the one he was married to, that meant something.
"Have you thought of a name?" Nasir suddenly asked out of the blue.
She gazed at him. She hadn't thought of a name yet because she wanted to do that with Nasir. And she hasn't even started going baby shopping because she didn't know where to start from. She has asked Ummu for help though, and she promised to help with the shopping and nursery.
"No, I haven't," she said. "We should come up with something soon, I think I like it better when you name."
"Really!" Nasir smiled. His hand trailed over to take her hand, then he held on tight to it. "We'll do that together."
"Where are you heading to?" Toni asked him the instant she noticed that he wasn't driving towards their house. She looked at her husband, wanting to know what was going on.
"I thought we should visit Ummu, she has being asking after you a lot," Nasir said, giving her a nervous smile.
"Ohh, okay," she said, relaxing. She could have pointed it out to him that she and Ummu practically spoke to each other everyday, but what was the use of that? She did miss Ummu, she hasn't seen her in weeks, and would love to see her once again. So there was no harm in going over there.
