clay plopped himself down on his couch,  the cushions dipping under the force of his movements, an exasperated sigh leaving his mouth. he was pissed, to say the least.

he was pissed mostly at himself. he was mad at himself for not being able to do things, for not being as talented as others, for being himself. there was more, clay just decided not to dwell on those.

"god, fucking help me."

the moment the last word fell from his mouth, a red flash filled the room. when clay could see again, a boy shorter than him with shiny black hair and surprisingly bright golden eyes was sitting cross-legged on clay's carpet. tiny golden horns jutted out just over his messy locks, smoke curling into the air from the sharp tips, bangs held back by a seemingly soft white bandana. the boy's shoulders were bare, tattoos circling his body under his shirt and over his arms, stopping at his wrist.

"jeez, angels are really fast. i had to fight like seven just to get here first," the boy complained. clay noticed a thin cut on the side of his cheek and white feathers scattered by his feet.

"uh..." clay stood from his couch. the boy's eyes followed him, a lazy smile appearing on his face.

"i'm nick! a bland name for someone like me, i know, but you can call me sapnap if you really want," the boy grinned. he hopped up from the floor, holding his hand out. multiple bracelets hung off his wrists and forearms, almost covering the tattoos with their gold glow.

"um, i'm clay. why are you here?" clay took nick's hand, shaking it slowly.

"well, you said you needed help, so i came because i think you're cute!"

clay felt his face heat up. this boy was awfully blunt.

"oh, well, i was thinking more of... angelic help?" clay said, more of a question than a statement.

"i can be angelic! watch," nick released clay's hand. clay watched as nick's horns and tattoos disappeared, along with his jewelry, all being replaced with big silvery wings and a bright halo.

"see?" nick grinned. even his eyes had changed, now a shimmery blue instead of gold.

"so, what did you need help with?"

"i'm sorry, i'm still trying to understand the fact that some kind of creature is in my living room," clay shook his head, turning around to pace. he heard wings flap behind him as he started walking in a circle around the room.

nick was sitting in the air, wings flapping to hold himself up, hands folded neatly in his lap. he looked like he wanted to move around or say something but was composing himself for the time being.

"well, ignore that and we can figure out what's wrong so we're both happy!" nick said, smiling brightly at clay when the blond was facing him. he shifted back to his first form, touching down gingerly on the carpet.

"...can i have a hug?" clay said softly, hands reaching up to cover his face in embarrassment.

nick laughed, walking forward and wrapping clay in a warm embrace. clay felt himself relax into the creature's arms, head resting on his. nick was shorter than him, clay noticed, so nick almost had to stand on his toes to give clay a good hug.

"um, thank you," clay mumbled, pulling away after a few minutes.

"yep! so, what now? did i help you?" nick asked, twirling his bracelets.

"not exactly," clay muttered.

"what? what else can i do?" nick's eyes were suddenly alert, movements less casual, standing up straight.

"i mean... distract me?" clay asked, sitting down and motioning for nick to follow.

when nick's face went pink, clay realized how sexual that sentence sounded.

"not like that! i meant, like, talk to me," clay corrected himself, feeling as though his face was on fire. nick sat down across from him, practically curling up on the sofa.

the silence was awkward for a moment.

"how about we introduce ourselves again? i feel like it was rushed and didn't give a lot of thought," clay crossed his legs, resting his palms on his knees.

"sure, i'll go first," nick cleared his throat, "my name is nicholas, but call me nick or sapnap. i'm a shapeshifter that's usually viewed as 'evil.'"

"i'm clay... just a human, i guess?" clay shrugged his shoulders.

"so, you never told me why you were so angry or whatever," nick sat forward, propping his chin up with his palm, elbow resting on his knee.

"oh, i was just mad because i can't do shit," clay replied, "nothing important."

"uh, that i so very important. you can probably do way more shit than me," nick countered.

clay scoffed. "hell no, you're literally a shapeshifter, i'm a fucking human."

nick's eyes softened. "wait, am i making you feel bad about yourself because i can shapeshift? oh my gosh, why didn't you say anything?!"

"no, no, it's okay—"

clay was cut off by nick waving his hand in the air, mostly to get clay to shut up.

"look, i'll..." nick trailed off as his "inhuman" features melted away, revealing a completely normal green-eyed boy in front of him.

"nick, you didn't have to do that," clay sighed, already mad at himself again for making nick have to shift into a human.

"no, it's okay! i've wanted to do this for a long time," nick smiled, "i wanna see how humans live. i think it'd be fun to live with you, too!"

live with him?

"you're... you're gonna live with me?"

a boy who knew nothing of being a human... was going to live with clay? a cute boy, not even just a normal boy?

"yeah! is that okay...?" nick asked, feet tapping on the couch cushions.

"i, um, yes! yes, that is totally fine," clay breathed. the room was starting to spin.

nick's outline was blurry, his voice distant. "clay? clay, are you okay?"

clay woke up to nick's hands fingers gently carding through his hair. outside the windows, the sky was dark and twinkling with silver stars, outlining constellations clay could never remember the names of.

"oh, hey, you're okay!" nick's voice was cheery, though he sounded tired as well.

"mhm..." clay hummed. he sat up on his elbows, frowning when nick's fingers disappeared from his hair.

"i moved us to what i thought was your bedroom."

clay squinted as he looked around the room, taking in all the familiar things. "yep, you took us to my room."

"how are you liking living as a human?" clay yawned, sitting up fully to face nick. the raven's new green eyes were sparkly and excited in the pale moonlight trickling in through the window.

"it's been fun! my eyes keep trying to close, though," nick shrugged.

clay laughed. "you're tired, dummy. why didn't you go to sleep?"

nick shrugged, gaze dropping to his lap. clay's eyes danced over him as the boy next to him slowly leaned over, head dropping onto clay's shoulder. gentle snores interrupted the peaceful room, breaths soft as they slipped from nick's parted lips.

"how the fuck," clay muttered in amazement.

"oh, right, i never told him what he could do to help me."
