"wil, i don't have to dance with anyone i don't want to," techno muttered to the brunet as he was pulled along the edge of the ballroom. it was packed with masked royalty; techno and wilbur were both part of that category. technically, they weren't supposed to know who others were, but techno pulled some strings.

"tonight my name is ichor and your name is mars," wilbur hissed back, to which techno rolled his eyes to. he thought the whole "masked ball" was a dumb idea and wanted to go back to his quarters.

"and you have to dance with a few people. i can't dance with you for the whole time, you know that."

"and who are you gonna dance with? your girlfriend? you don't even know what she's wearing tonight," techno scoffed. his dance card was completely empty and he wanted to keep it that way.

wilbur sighed. "god, techno, just dance with one person. one person, and i'll leave you alone."

"fine. but you better keep that damn promise," techno muttered as he ripped his arm away from wilbur. he adjusted his mask so it sat more comfortable on his face before stalking away from his brother.

as he walked, everything he hated about this event began to run through his mind. he had to wash out the pink in his hair, which took a very long time because it was coloured by magic. he had to get tailored for a completely new suit that wasn't horrible or uncomfortable, it just wasn't his style. techno hated the vast hall of people he knew but couldn't identify.

techno was so wrapped up in his hatred for masquerades that he didn't even notice when he crashed into someone. this person was dressed in a pale white baggy shirt similar to techno's but his mask was a few different shades of purple, and even a flower was tucked behind his ear.

"oh, i'm sorry, i didn't see you," techno apologized quickly, taking their arm to steady them.

"it's fine," the person replied. his voice was familiar, but techno guessed all of the people in the hall's voices would be if he were to talk to all of them.

the boy's eyes were strikingly green with flecks of orange in the irises, contrasting nicely with the purple accents on his outfit. techno found him enjoying the colours together.

"well, since we're already talking, would you like to dance?" techno asked, hoping to god his mask covered his blush.

"oh, sure!" the boy in purple nodded his head. techno watched as his fluffy black hair bounced as his head moved.

techno moved his hand to take the boy's, leading him to the dancefloor.

"so, what's your name tonight?" techno asked as a new song came on and they started to sway together.

"aster, and you?"

"mars."

aster smiled. "that's a nice name. i had a magical fish named mars for a while."

"oh? what happened to it?" techno asked, twirling aster around.

"he died. nothing special. i was really young at the time, so it doesn't cause as much pain to think about in the present," aster replied. techno nodded.

"you said it was magic. did mars have powers or something like that?"

"it had the ability to heal, i believe. my father said he healed me with mars's scales every time i got hurt, and that was the main reason mars died. that, and he couldn't have lasted much longer anyway." aster shrugged his shoulders slowly, tone growing sadder.

techno squeezed the hand that was holding asters's. "i'm sorry if i made you sad. we can talk about something else if you want."

"oh, you didn't make me sad at all. all it is, is just that the thought of an old friend dying to continuously heal me makes me a bit guilty every time i think about it," aster chuckled lightly, glancing over his shoulder as the song slowed down.

"i suppose we should slow dance now?" aster asked, sidling closer to techno. the (now) brunet nodded, one hand resting at aster's waist more firmly now while aster moved closer until their chests were almost touching.

it was silent between them for a few minutes, enough for the song to be over. aster leaned back to look at techno in the eyes.

"want to just... go somewhere else?" aster asked quietly. techno nodded and pulled away completely, still holding aster's hand, and started pulling him to the entrance to the gardens.

"are you cold?" techno asked once he noticed aster's shivers.

"a bit."

techno reached to unclip his cloak, draping it over aster's shoulders. aster looked up at him as techno connected the gold clasps together, holding the cloak in place.

"thank you," aster whispered. "can i see who you are really?"

techno bit his lip, thinking it over. he shook his head, closing his eyes so he didn't see how aster wilted a bit. "it's better this way. more exciting, don't you think?"

"perhaps..."

"i tell you what. in a week, on the last day we are in this kingdom, come here to this spot in the garden. we'll reveal who we really are there, okay?" techno picked up aster's hand from where it was limp in aster's lap.

"alright. can i kiss you tonight, though?"

techno didn't answer, only leaned in closer, gently connecting their lips. it was slow and sweet, their lips moving with each other's like they were meant to be like that for the rest of time. techno opened his eyes as he pulled away, squeezing aster's hand one last time before he stood and left the garden.

nick opened his eyes to see mars gone, the only trace of him his scent lingering on the red wrapped around nick's shoulders. he could hear music and laughter from the hall still and he wondered if mars had gone back to the crowd.

"there you are, nick! where did you go?"

he looked over to see a boy in green rushing towards him. nick only smiled and looked down at his lap.

"nick?"

"i think i'm in love with someone who i don't even know their real identity, clay," nick whispered into the air, smiling softly.
