A long time ago, in lands that were forever forgotten, a love beyond all others began to brew. The love was between a human warrior of a tribe long lost and a skeleton woman with the stars in her hand.
The two spent many days and nights, learning of each other and their lands. The human taught the monster the ways a man could fight while she taught him the secrets of the night sky. Their hearts and souls joined as one in many ways, their eyes only seeking each other.
The father of the skeleton monster did not approve. He had reason to hate and despise humans as they were well known for sweet lies and bitter hands. He did not care that the human's words rang true nor the fact that the human's tribe was a mix of all.
The father only cared for the safety of his precious children. He swore he would protect them with everything he had. Yet, he knew he could not face the human head on without loosing his children's favor.
He planned and planned, all the while the human wormed their way into his family's life. The young son that soon learned all the tricks and trade of a human, the wife that taught the human to cook wonderful food. It soon became too much.
He killed the human while the family was near the sea, drowning the man that loved his eldest child. Screams that could not be heard floated from the dying human, begging the father to let him live, pleading for help... Yet, none came.
The father was satisfied, before the screams of his children greeted his ears. The eldest shouted and cursed at the father, tears blurring her eyes before she tried to reach for his lover's body. He refused her the simple touch, telling her his true feelings of the human.
Those words never were said though as the Gods of Death, Hate, Love and Revenge appeared before the family. Their glowing eyes were harsh as their powerful auras.
The family cowered and bowed before them, the father quickly asking what his family had done to deserve such a visit from the most powerful of beings.
None of them spoke but the Gods of Death and Revenge.
"You killed a man in cold blood."
"Your own revenge blinding you from the true love and care he held."
"We must punish you for breaking the bond of mates that should've been."
"But you will not be the only one to be punish." Revenge hissed the end, their beady red eyes flaring.
The father's body grew cold and before he could beg for mercy, the four Gods had already began the curse.
Screams once again were swallowed by the sea as the family was dragged into its dark and now unforgiving depths. The transformation was painful, the water bending and breaking their bones in the most horrible of ways. They all could feel their lungs being filled with water, but it never drowning them as it had done with the human.
Soon, the pain stopped, but the family could not return to the land of their home. They never could for they no longer bore legs to walk on.
The family were the first Mer-people, they were forever cursed this way. But they weren't alone for long.
Soon, more people fell into the sea and grew tails. They were men and women that lusted and greed over the cursed family. They, till the family found a way to break it, were slaves to the family's words, unable to say no or think otherwise.
When they were freed, they too could not leave the sea. Trapped, they fell in love with many of their former slave brothers and sisters. Together, they had created more and more.
However, it wasn't long before some of the new species discovered a blessing amongst the curse. They were blessed with the ability of song. The ability to enchant with their voice.
To continue with this power though, they had to feed on creatures that held determination. If they did not, then their own body would begin to wither, corrupting their mind as well as their body. These would become the haunting Sirens that plagued rough waters to feed on the few 'lucky' sailors or animals that had survived.
It soon became a custom of mortal to throw strange trinkets and items into the deep water before leaving any bay for the Mother, the True Queen. They had hoped to win her favor and have her whisper softness in the Father, the True King's, ears, for he controlled the horrible storms that would leave them asunder.
Some others, though, hoped to bring horrible fortune to their sailing enemies and offered virgins of men and women for the True King. These virgin men and women would have their hands and feet bound, their bodies thrown off the highest cliff there was or dropped from a ship with rocks weighing them down.
The Gods, most likely the same ones that had curse so many, had blessed these misfortune men and women. For many, they were given the ability to swim and breath under the waves like that of the Merman and Merwoman, but they held their land legs and could walk the distant shores. Others were even more fortunate and were given the graceful ability to fly along beaches and watery cliffs.
The two were quickly known as the Nymphs and the Harpies. The Harpies wings were never true or real, but simply them trying to cover up in the cold winds of the watery spray. Neither did Nymphs have glossy hair or eyes of glass. All confused what they could merely get a glimpse of and say it was true, drowning out the truth.
The True King and True Queen welcomed them, however. They showed the Nymphs and Harpies how to survive, how to hide in the darkest depths of the ocean or how to spot food so far away in the darkest of areas. The Harpies didn't stay in the water long, but the lessons were never forgotten, only improved upon. Nymphs namely stayed near beaches and uncharted islands, making their new homes far away from the damaging world that once wanted to swallow them whole.
Centuries passed, the True King and True Queen falling and giving way to the eldest daughter. She helped many sailors navigate the seas by using the light of stars. She helped give peace and had began the deeper dive in the trenches of the ocean.
She was killed by pirates while she and a group of hunters swam looking for food. Her death though woke the final child. The final Royal.
He woke alone and without a familiar face. He mourned the deaths of his parents and sister for many human years before he began to travel the growing world.
He met many people, but only one did he dare bring to the new city of his people. The human was brilliant and interested in many things but not for greed. No, they lusted and greed over knowledge and understanding, nothing more and nothing less.
When they left, the last child began to do the same. This need for knowledge was tempered with what would be best for their people. Still, they were able to create things that only the far and distant future could hold.
The last child soon brought their human friend back once more and they could only be in awe of the world. A world that was of such wonder! Then they left once more and this time to never be seen again, not for a long time.
The child though soon became known as the King of the Future, the King that would bring them peace with the land-walkers forever. He could only hope to be what they wanted him to be. For everyone's sake.
