Chapter 13: Bellamy

"What's a grounder?" Harper asks.

"Doesn't she know?" I interject.

"You don't really tell a five-year-old about ruthless killers!" Finn says loudly.

"Look, they said," - I point to the note - "Return what is ours, and we'll return yours to you. They're obviously keeping Clarke alive as a hostage trade."

Finn's face calms a little. "So what do we do with Zak?"

"Nothing yet. Those goddamn grounders didn't leave a return address."

"Great."

"So, are you gonna explain what grounders are?" I fold my arms as he turns to face Harper.

"Harps, before we lived on Earth, everyone lived up in space. Until a few years ago, and around a year before you were born."

"You lived in the sky?" she awes.

"Yes, and as I was saying, we moved back to Earth after a long period of time after a nuclear war. We thought no one had survived, but some people stayed on the ground and they lived through the nuclear attacks. They're who the grounders are."

"And they have Mommy?"

"Yes."

"I'm sure we'll find her," I say. "Staying on that subject, have you seen O?"

"Yeah, she went into your house. She didn't look so good."

My stomach drops. If anything's happened to her I have no idea what I'll do. "Thanks, I'll go and find her."

"Okay, I'll probably talk to Dr. Griffin a little more, perhaps look at some camera footage if I can."

I nod my head before putting my hand on his shoulder. "Finn, I know this is distressing, but don't do anything Clarke would hate you for."

"Like what?"

I sigh. "I don't know, just think before you do anything stupid, like finding the grounder lair or something else moronic."

"O, just talk to me!" I repeat for what I count to be the third time.

"I can't!" she shouts, the tears still running down her cheeks.

"What's so terrible that you have to keep it from me?"

"Something I can't say - won't say."

"Please just tell me. Perhaps I can help."

"There's nothing to help..."

I step forward and put my hands on her shoulders. "There must be."

"Do you really want me to tell you?"

"Of course, I'm your big brother."

She sighs and lets one more tear drop down. "I've done something stupid, so stupid but I loved it."

"What is it?"

"I... I "did it" with Jasper."

I can feel my eyes open wider and my jaw drops subconsciously. "You did? When?"

"Last night; he asked if we could meet up in the evening, one thing led to another and... Yeah."

"Oh, my god, have you told anyone else?"

She shakes her head. "Not yet."

"What would Lincoln say?"

"I don't even want to think about that right now."

There's a long pause before one of us speaks again. I meet Octavia's eyes. "Why did you do it?" I ask.

"I don't know," she answers. "But I think, deep down, there's a part of me that still loves him. Like a more-than-a-friend love."

"I know that feeling." I sigh and sit down before that feeling overtakes me.

"You do?" She sits down next to me. "Towards...?"

"Towards... Clarke, sometimes."

"Jesus, we're get into so much trouble if anyone finds out about this conversation."

"Then you can't tell." I jump up and stare straight into her eyes.

"I won't."

"Swear on mom and dad."

She looks a bit quizzical but obliges anyway. "I swear on mom and dad."

"Good." I walk over to the front door and place my hand on the handle. "I better be going, I have some business with Zak."

She gives a curt nod of dismissal and I walk out the door, heading to the drop ship.

I'm greeted with a face of sorrow when I see Zak. "What's up with you?" I ask him.

"Nothing. Pass me a drink?"

"Not until you tell me what that stupid bitch Beth did with Clarke."

"Whoa, easy." He lifts his hands up in surrender. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Clarke has been taken hostage by your little grounder friends and they want a trade."

"They want to trade me for her?"

"Yeah, so you better show us where your camp is or I won't hesitate to snap your neck."

My blood is rushing through my veins and I remember what I said to Finn: don't do anything Clarke would hate you for. I shouldn't be threatening Zak, I should be reasoning with him.

"Sorry, just tell me where your camp is."

"No, not until you let me out of these ropes."

"Deal." I grab the small pocket knife from my bed and slice through the rope. "Happy now?"

"My camp is north from here, about twelve kilometres out. Does that help?"

"I guess." I get up, still holding the pocket knife, and turn around towards the door. "By the way, don't try to escape -"

The words are grasped from me as one of the ropes is wrapped around my neck. I try to turn around but Zak has me in a firm grip, tightening his hold each second. I cough and splutter but he still doesn't let go.

And then everything is black.

2. Would you want a 3rd book in this series?

3. Should I kill off anyone? (Not including Clarke, Finn, Bellamy, Octavia or Raven even though everyone hates Raven.)

4. Kik me?: milliehadfield I have no social life.
