Chapter 16: Clarke

I haven't spoken since I got to the grounder hideout, but no one's talked to me either. I have no explanation, no information about where I am. All I can think about is how I'm going to escape, or what Finn's doing right now.

"Clarke of the Sky People," a girl calls out, peeking through the bars of my "cell".

"Hmm," is my answer.

"You're not as chatty as I thought you would be."

"I don't really feel like talking, being a prisoner and all."

"That's a shame, then."

"What do you mean?" She pushes the door open, hinges squeaking.

"I've been instructed by Beth to make you talk, get information out of you." She steps forward with each word.

"And how do you plan to do that?"

She draws a glittering sword from her hilt. "Take a wild guess."

"No. No, I'll ta -"

Behind the girl, another two step in.

"Back off, Poppy," the younger-looking one says.

"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Poppy answers, sliding her sword into the hilt again, possibly trying to hide it.

"What are you doing with Beth's sword?" the older one confronts, grabbing it off Poppy and handing it to the other girl who I guess is Beth, my "worst nightmare".

"What do you think? Getting the Sky Girl to talk."

"We can do that later," Beth says, rolling her eyes. "Lucy, go and put my sword away."

"Sure," Lucy says, disappearing into another room.

"So you're the dreaded Beth that Zak's been talking about?" I ask.

"See, Poppy? She'll talk just like that," she answers snarkily.

"Oh, piss off," Poppy mutters, storming out of the room.

Beth walks towards me, sitting on a chair a couple of metres away, as if she's scared of what I might do.

"And what if I don't talk?" I say.

"What do you think this chair's for? We know what you Sky People have been doing to Zak."

"Just let me go; why am I even here?"

"You're a hostage trade for us."

I stand up. "Why me? Why not anyone else from our camp?"

She stands up too, even though she's considerably smaller than me. "You're useful to them, Clarke of the Sky People. As one of your peoples' healers, you're a valued member of the group. Your camp will fall apart without you there."

I sit back down on the cold, stone floor. "When do we trade?"

"Ah, right, didn't get to that bit..."

"Explain. Now." She slowly sits down on the chair, a smirk playing across her face. "How would you like a fight to the death? A battle where only one tribe wins?"

"Does this look like a game to you?" I look into her eyes, holding my stare. Her expression doesn't change.

Another girl bursts into the room. "Dison laik yu strat?" she asks in a foreign language.

"Emo laik baga," Beth answers, completely understanding her.

"Breik em."

"No. Dison laik ain."
