Chapter 10: Raven

I watch Octavia run into the drop ship, debating whether I should help with the patient or not. Either way I'll have to go in there to find Zak.

No, stop, Raven. You need to convince Bellamy that you're not into him.

I need to find Zak anyway, to clear things up. Last time I saw him he was still tied to that chair, so I doubt he's gone anywhere else.

"Raven," someone says behind me. I turn around to see Bellamy standing there, hands in his pockets. The afternoon gloom makes the shadows under his eyes more pronounced and I can see the sheer pain smeared on his face.

"Oh, hey," I answer stiffly.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

"Finding Zak. You?"

He scowls. "Not much, now."

"What do you mean?"

"Before... You know... Kissed him, I was gonna ask you to go with me somewhere... Like on a date."

My eyes open wider. "A date?"

"Yeah. A first date, almost."

"Can't we still do that?"

"No, not really."

"Oh."

I'm about to say something else but he turns around and walks off before I can. I sigh audibly, rubbing my hands through my hair in frustration. God, I'm so stupid. If I hadn't kissed Zak, me and Octavia would still be friends, Bellamy wouldn't be in a hissy fit with me and I wouldn't feel so awkward right now, about to go in and see him. It's all coming back to bite me in the ass.

I squeeze my hands together in attempted preparation and walk inside the drop ship with mock confidence. As soon as I open the door to the room Zak's in, he smiles widely. My stomach feels knotted and tangled inside me.

"Hey, Raven!" he says cheerfully.

"Hi, Zak," I answer quietly.

"What's up, is something wrong?" His face falls.

He actually cares.

"Zak, please don't take this the wrong way, but -"

"Yeah?"

"... But I'm kind of dating Bellamy."

He looks like he's been punched in the gut, both mentally and physically. "Y-you are?"

I nod in response. "Yeah."

"So... Why the kiss?"

"I don't know what I was thinking, and you're cute, I guess."

"Did that kiss mean nothing to you?" His face is scrunched up like a child. "Was it simply for the fun of it?"

I sigh for the second time in less than two minutes. "If I said no I would be lying."

His lips start trembling violently, tears threatening to spring from his eyes.

"Zak, please don't cry," I beg.

He looks up at me. "I'm not crying," he protests, but the tears rolling down his cheeks tell me a different story. If he still wasn't tied to that chair I'm sure I would be close to death right now.

"I'm so sorry." I start to walk out of the door when I bump into Clarke behind me.

"Raven, thank God you're here," she says. Her cheeks are flushed red, or maybe that's a spot of blood. "I need help in medical, now."

I jog into the room across, leaving Zak in the other. Inside, a girl is lying on top of a table with an arrow lodged in her lower chest. Finn and Octavia stand around her while Clarke is at the side of the room washing her hands with blood-stained water.

"It's too late to save her," I say.

Clarke glares at me. "It's never too late to save someone."

"Do you even have any antidote?"

"We'll work something out," Finn answers for her.

"Okay, then... What should I do?"

"Clean the wound," Octavia says. "It might help."

"Shouldn't we take out the arrow?" I ask in hope of doing something slightly more interesting.

"Not yet," Finn says. "Even a few millimetres upward and we could hit a major artery."

Clarke smiles at him, clearly proud of him expressing his little collection of medical knowledge.

I grab a towel and dunk it into a bowl of Monty's legendary moonshine. When I apply it to the girl's neck she winces but I carry on circling it around the arrow, keeping a straight face. Sooner or later I'm sure everyone will realise there's no hope. Moonshine will do next to nothing; this girl's just going to be another wasted effort.

That's when she starts seizing. I don't jump back or anything, I expected it to happen soon. It looks like the poison's starting to kick in.

"Quick, hold her down!" Octavia shouts. I snap out of my daze and grab her head, keeping it off the table so she doesn't hit it.

From behind me I hear Clarke frantically muttering under her breath. "Please stop, please stop, please stop." She rushes around the room, grabbing random tools as if that will somehow help. Her hand locks onto the moonshine and she swiftly grabs the arrow with the other. She simultaneously pulls it out and pours the moonshine over the spot where it rested.

What the hell...

"Clarke, stop," Finn whispers to her, but loud enough so me and Octavia can hear. "You're panicking." He lightly touches her shoulder and she stops in her tracks. She wraps her arms around his neck and pulls him down to her level.

"I can't save her, can I?" she asks him, her eyes glossy with tears.

"No, I'm afraid not. But it was nice of you to try."

I search through my pockets and dig up a switchblade. "I'll end it."

I drag the blade across the girl's neck quickly, her throat slitting open and her blood flowing out and onto the table. Clarke flinches, but only scarcely.

I notice something in the blood, something strange. It's unlike any abnormality I've seen before, yet it's barely noticeable.

Her blood is bubbling.
