Chapter 21: Clarke

"Stop!" I shout at the grounder girl; I think her name is Courtney.

Her silver-blue eyes gleam sinisterly. "Come on, you're no fun," she says, opening up the crack in the wall even more by hitting it with her spear from the opposite side of the room.

The fog wisps through the gap and touches my skin again. I hold in my scream for as long as I can as I watch my burning skin turn redder. I can't hold it in any more, and I let out a shriek louder than the last. Courtney covers her ears but still laughs.

"Ready to talk?" she asks.

"I was going to talk anyway," I answer, my voice breaking.

"I knew that, Clarke of the Sky People. We're just playing around."

"Look, I'll talk if you -"

Hanna and Melia run into the room, out of breath. The seem to be the only ones with common sense around here.

"You're all crazy!" Melia shouts, her blonde hair flowing over her shoulders as she runs to help me.

"Excuse me?" Courtney questions. "Who's side are you on?"

"Certainly one more reasonable than this one," Hanna answers, following her partner in crime.

They both begin to unscrew the chains, but stop when Beth and Lucy walk in.

"What are you doing?" Beth asks, drawing her sword.

"Um..." Melia mumbles, trying to hide the loose chains.

"They're trying to help the Sky Girl!" Courtney confronts.

Hanna pulls off her jacket and stuffs it in the gap to block the fog. "What you're doing is wrong," she says.

"We don't know what the hell the Sky People could be doing to Zak right now. If we torture the girl enough then she'll tell us and we can retaliate with her," Lucy says as if it's obvious.

"I'll talk, okay?!" I shout. "Just stop doing this to me."

Courtney looks Beth in the eyes. "You're not giving into her, are you?" she asks her.

Beth laughs and looks me up and down. "She looks so desperate I feel like I should. Lucy, untie her."

Lucy shoves Hanna and Melia out of the way, yanking my hands from the chains. She drags me over to Beth who beckons me into another room. She sits me down on the floor, her sword still poised.

"So," she begins. "Where do we start?"

"You know," I say. "My friends will go ballistic if you do anything else to me. I bet they have something planned already." I really hope they do.

"You have friends?" Beth covers her mouth with mock surprise.

"Wow, childish," I say sarcastically.

Poppy appears in the room; she was probably listening in. "Shut up, Beth, and get on with what's important. And she does have friends - Bellamy's pretty hot."

Beth glares at her, then at me. "Anyway, to the point. What have you been doing to Zak?"

"Throwing some punches, that's all I really know," I tell her.

"That better not be all you know, or I'll throw some punches at you." She stands up quickly and hovers her sword at my neck.

"Chill," Poppy says, raising her hands.

"Bants, nau," Beth spits. "O ai frag yu op."

"Shish yu op otaim, ba nowe dula yu op," Poppy retaliates.
